David Moyes believes Everton’s home performance against Manchester United represented progress despite the match ending in defeat.
The Blues’ winless home run now stretches to seven games after Benjamin Sesko’s second half winner on the counter attack. It was a goal that came with the hosts pushing hard for a breakthrough but unable to find the quality to provide it.
The disappointment did not prevent supporters remaining at Hill Dickinson Stadium to applaud the Everton players off the pitch – a far cry from the boos that greeted their efforts after the draw with Leeds United and defeat to Bournemouth.
Asked whether he thought there was progress in the narrow defeat, Moyes said: “I do, yeah, I thought they did well tonight. I thought the crowd did great, I thought the players did great – they have done all season.”
The manager’s verdict was that a tight game was separated by a solitary goal and that either side could have left the Liverpool waterfront with three points. He said: “I’m disappointed with the result. I’m happy enough with the second half performance – I didn’t think we did enough in the first half but overall we lost a really tight game that could have easily gone in our favour.”
It was not lost on Moyes that the sides were separated by a strike from a forward who cost Man United more than £70m in the summer – more than twice as much as Everton’s leading striker, Thierno Barry.
He said: “We narrowly beat United at Old Trafford 1-0 and probably shouldn’t have won on the night but held out and got a result. I thought they were a bit fortunate tonight to win the game. I thought we were probably, certainly in the second half, the more likely team [to score].
“But we couldn’t get the goal. It’s the quality… the quality which costs big money. We’re just lacking that little bit where we could probably get a goal and we didn’t quite.”
