Luis Diaz could receive financial penalties from Bayern Munich due to his difficulties mastering German. The former Liverpool winger has been in scintillating form since completing his £65.5million transfer last summer.

He’s notched 19 goals and provided 15 assists across 33 appearances in all competitions. Bayern are soaring at the summit of the Bundesliga and secured second place behind only Arsenal in the Champions League’s league phase.

However, the adjustment away from the pitch hasn’t proved quite so straightforward for Diaz. Like all non-German speaking recruits the club brings in, he’s been required to attend classes to learn the local language.

The sessions, which he must attend two to three times weekly, are not voluntary, according to BILD. In fact, they’re stipulated within his £200,000-plus-per-week contract.

“But I knew that I would fit in very well here, that I would contribute to the team’s success – just as I had done before in Liverpool. So FC Bayern placed their trust in me, and I’m trying to repay that trust on the pitch.”

When he arrived in Munich in July, Portuguese international Joao Palhinha, who is also a Spanish speaker, stepped in as his interpreter. However, he departed for Tottenham shortly afterwards.

Vice-captain Joshua Kimmich, who has witnessed numerous Spanish and South American players pass through the club during his tenure, assumed the responsibility.

“We have a few guys who can speak a bit of Spanish,” said the Germany international. “His English is also okay. So we’re managing that as a team.”

Harry Kane has equally taken considerable time adjusting to the notoriously demanding German language.
