It’s now 26 years since a Premier League away win at Man City – and no wins at the Etihad in the top-flight

Lewis Hall of Newcastle United celebrates with teammates after scoring

Newcastle United put in a good battling display at the Etihad Stadium but just fell short – and their rotten record at this venue continues.

United had slipped behind on 14 minutes after Omar Marmoush battled through the middle of the pitch and picked out Nico O’Reilly who lashed home first time just inside the box to beat Nick Pope with a vicious shot.

A Sandro Tonali corner was half-cleared by City on 22 minutes. Jacob Ramsey helped it on to Lewis Hall, who fired a shot that took a deflection off Rayan Ait-Nouri and beat Gianluigi Donnaruma to make it 1-1 with 22 minutes on the clock

But the joy lasted just five minutes as Antoine Semenyo played in Erling Haaland down the right who lifted a cross for England youngster O’Reilly to steer a header past Pope with Kieran Trippier unable to get close to him.

Here’s how Newcastle fared at the Etihad Stadium:

Nick Pope 7

Will be disappointed with the opener but made good blocks as the game wore on. Denied Halaand and Foden at the death. Late drama saw him sprint upfield for a last gasp corner but it wasn’t to be.

Kieran Trippier 7

Used his guile to keep Newcastle in the game. Had 78 touches overall. A decent effort.

Malick Thiaw 7

Was a real threat and was crisp in the challenge.

Dan Burn 8

At least rattled Haaland and was unfortunate not to get an equaliser after being shoved into the box. Man of the match.

Lewis Hall 8

Fired home the equaliser via a deflection and was always on the ball. Turned by Haaland in the build-up to second goal but this was a decent display overall.

Jacob Ramsey 7

A hand in the equaliser and battled hard.

Sandro Tonali 7

Left wanting at times in first half as City drove the middle. But was efficient in the second half. A lovely cross for Burn’s chalked off goal.

Joe Willock 6

Lacked impact, managing just 19 touches and picking up a soft yellow card. A wasted opportunity overall as he also didn’t make the most of a couple of openings.

Anthony Elanga 5

Lacked impact and conviction. Has tremendous pace but decision making questionable. Just one accurate cross and no shots.

Nick Woltemade 6

Not as effective in midfield as Qarabag and Villa. Lost initial header for opener and left chasing Semenyo in build-up to second goal. Looked fatigued by the end.

Anthony Gordon 6

Forced Donnarumma into a couple of saves. Was a threat but was always going to struggle to match heights of Qarabag. Just 14 touches in all.

Subs

Joelinton 6 (for Woltemade 59)

Harvey Barnes 6 (for Willock 59)

William Osula (for Gordon 78)

Jacob Murphy (for Elanga 78)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to get a mark
