Manchester United face Everton on Monday night meaning they will face former transfer target Tyler Dibling.

In the recent summer transfer window, Manchester United were interested in Tyler Dibling but ended up walking away from the deal because of a £100 million price tag set by Southampton.

United viewed Dibling as a ‘generational’ talent, but ultimately decided to reinforce their attack with Premier League-proven stars such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

Our recent record vs Everton has been mixed, can Michael Carrick take us to a win?

The recruitment team at Old Trafford will look back on that decision with huge relief, especially as Dibling has failed to impress at Everton after making a £40 million move to Merseyside.

Dibling is yet to score for Everton in his first 17 appearances for the club, and the 20-year-old is struggling to even make it into David Moyes’ line-up.

With Jack Grealish injured for United’s trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday evening, Dibling could be given a chance to impress against a team that wanted to sign him in the summer.

Ahead of the match, Everton boss Moyes challenged Dibling to step up to the challenge.

“I’d be thinking I better get my finger out and show the manager what I was really all about,” Moyes said when asked how Dibling should get his way into the side.

Moyes is a big admirer of Dibling, though, saying: “I think he’s one who we think we’ve got a really good, talented player on our hands. We need him to develop and get used to us a little bit.”

Man United will be glad they dodged Tyler Dibling deal

Southampton’s extortionate asking price for Dibling in the summer thankfully made United re-think their transfer strategy.

Instead of gambling a huge portion of the budget on a teenage forward, Ineos went and spent the funds on Mbeumo and Cunha, who have been able to hit the ground running at Old Trafford.

While Ineos’ strategy of signing wonderkids has had success at United and in Carrington, it is important to spend smart and add quality to the starting XI.

According to Transfermarkt, Dibling’s current market value is just £26m, so United would have had huge regrets if they had signed off a £100m deal in the summer.
