Leeds United were forced to settle for a point away to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon as Anton Stach’s incredible free-kick was cancelled out by Tammy Abraham late on.
Before this match, I said in my preview that I’d have absolutely taken a draw away to the side sitting third in the Premier League table.
That’s what we ended up with, so happy days. However, the circumstances of our draw make it a little more complex.
Aston Villa 1-1 Leeds United: Tammy Abraham cancels out Anton Stach screamer
Leeds were good value for our first half lead, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s heavy touch denying him from a better chance of beating Emi Martinez inside the box.
We did get our deserved opener, though, and it came in simply sensational circumstances. Anton Stach lined up a free-kick from the best part of 30 yards, with Martinez leaving his near post gaping, which the Leeds midfielder took full advantage of.
Stach wrapped in an outrageous free-kick for the opener that saw Leeds again have something to hold onto on the road.
Whiel it was a valiant defensive performance yet again versus one of the league’s big-hitters, we couldn’t keep the Villans at bay for a clean sheet and win.
Our resistance was ultimately broke in scrappy circumstances. An in-swinging corner was met by the huge leap of Ezri Konsa, and Tammy Abraham angled his thigh to loop the ball into the top corner for an equaliser.
Jayden Bogle blown away by “unbelievable” Anton Stach performance for Leeds United
You wouldn’t have known that it was Stach’s first appearance back after an injury that kept him out for three matches. He was everywhere again.
It didn’t yield maximum points, but his right-sided partner Jayden Bogle was eager to dish out the praise after full-time.
“He put in a top performance with and without the ball, his energy. And, then his quality for the goal is unbelievable,” Bogle told LUTV.
Leeds United dropped 17 points from winning positions – But it’s another positive point on the road
The stat will read that it’s another two points dropped from winning positions for Leeds, which makes it 17 this season.
It’s all a case of ifs and buts regarding that issue of seeing out games. But, that performance was very good with and without possession.
Stach has been integral to that. He provides incredible energy against the ball, but then shows his class when he gets it. The free-kick is just the cherry on top.
Even though it’s a gutting draw, you have to take the positives.
