Leeds United midfielder Anton Stach scored a sensational free-kick from distance as the Whites were held to a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.
Leeds knew it would take a very strong performance for 90 minutes to come away from third-placed Aston Villa with anything.
So, to come away with a point that feels like a loss is a testament to our performance under Daniel Farke.
Aston Villa 1-1 Leeds United: Anton Stach scores incredible free-kick
It was a game reminiscent of our 1-1 draw away at Everton back in January, in my opinion. Leeds were tactically the much better side in the first half and got the goal to show for it. But, we weren’t able to build on that lead or hold onto a clean sheet and three points.
More on the goal we scored, though.
A free-kick towards the left saw Anton Stach stood over the ball at least 30 yards from goal. Emi Martinez had one man stationed in his wall, the 5ft10 winger Leon Bailey.
The German saw fit to try his luck from range with Martinez clearly expecting a cross, and it paid off with a stunning strike arrowing into the top corner.
Anton Stach pinpoints Emi Martinez mistake as Leeds United midfielder scores screamer
It’s the third free-kick goal of the season for Stach, and it’s the best yet. Which takes some doing, given his peach away at Wolves and his deft effort at home to Crystal Palace.
However, he noted after full-time that this free-kick was an opportunistic effort. Stach says he spotted Martinez way over to the far post, and thought it was worth a shot.
“I just came back from injury so I have not had enough time to practice but before the free kick they asked, yeah, maybe you go second post,” Stach told LUTV.
“But then I saw that the goalkeeper had been lurking for the second post, and then I just thought I will just do it. I just tried it, because why not and then it worked out.”
That was Stach’s fourth goal of the season. And, that £17million is proving to be more of a bargain every time he steps onto the pitch.
