Newcastle United’s Dan Burn challenges Man City’s Erling Haaland
Manchester City star Erling Haaland was left fuming after Dan Burn ruffled his feathers during the 2-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Haaland had to be held back after Burn wrestled with the ex-Borussia Dortmund star last night and kept him off the scoresheet. Burn was booked early on in the game and managed to get through the 90 minutes without getting sent off after making three fouls.
However, Burn himself suffered some rough treatment and not only was the Blyth battler shoved by Ruben Dias on a free-kick he managed to head home before seeing the flag go up for offisde, a gruesome challenge from Bernardo Silva saw Burn cracked in the chest with the Man City man not issued a second yellow card after an earlier booking.
Those shocking images of Burn being smashed to the floor by Silva went viral on X last night with Newcastle far from happy with some of the officating.

Haaland took to X after the game to post a picture of Burn pulling his shirt with a caption: “Another day in the office”. However, Newcastle were angered by the fact that referee Thomas Bramall and the VAR team did not punish City after Malick Thiaw was caught in the face by Haaland with the his arm but the officials deemed the incident as the striker “not using his arm as a weapon”.
When asked about the referee and some ofthe decisions, Howe said: “I don’t think we were on the right end of the decisions today, but I don’t want to go down that road.
“I’m not one of those managers that wants to continually criticise officials, but I thought, again, it was one that we probably didn’t get the right end of the decisions.”
Newcastle away form has cost them dear this season
The Magpies lost for the seventh time this season on the road last night. That is already as many defeats as they had away from home in the whole of 2024-25.
It takes Newcastle to 11 defeats this season from 27 games and they are nine points off the pace in terms of the top five. But it wasn’t the loss last night that caused the damage, poor results at West Ham, Brentford and Sunderland have been the big issue for United this term while throwing away leads in games like Chelsea and Spurs at home also see United with a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the Champions League again via the Premier League.
Kieran Trippier makes Newcastle milestone
The full-back’s future remains unclear on Tyneside with his contract up at the end of the campaign.
There is no extension or trigger in place to keep him beyond this season although Eddie Howe would probably hold on to him if he couldn’t get a replacement.
Bringing in somebody who can offer what Trippier can in terms of experience will be close to impossible with the 35-year-old helping guide Newcastle amid Tino Livramento’s injury.
He took his Toon appearance tally to 150 last night against Man City after playing his third game in a week. And he left the field with the most touches (78) and most passes (68). Only Rodri and Bernardo Silva had more than Trippier from all the players on show.
