Crysencio Summerville is now just one goal shy of matching Carlos Tevez’s tally from the Argentine’s iconic single season at West Ham United during the ‘Great Escape’ of 2006/07.

And, like the former Manchester United, Man City and Juventus great, the Dutchman also exploded into life after months waiting to ignite.

Carlos Tevez’s first West Ham United goal famously came in March of that campaign, during a thrilling 4-3 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur. That brilliant free-kick ended a 20 match Premier League barren run in the process.

Your Man of the Match?

Was anyone better than Summerville?

Across all competitions, Crysencio Summerville endured 28 matches without finding the net between October 2024 and January 2026.

Confidence is a helluva thing. If you told the Hammers fans before Summerville broke his 14-month drought in the FA Cup against QPR that he would score six in seven games, while earning comparisons to a bona fide Upton Park legend, they would have questioned your sanity.

Speaking to Sky Sports on an evening where Summerville again looked like West Ham’s most potent threat, Jamie Redknapp could not help but wonder if he could replicate what Tevez achieved 19 years ago in East London.

“He and [Bournemouth right-back] Jimenez had a really good battle. Jimenez probably did better in the second half, but the first half was definitely Summerville’s,” former England, Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Redknapp says.

“He causes so many problems. I just want to see him [shoot and try his luck] more often.

“It’s got that feel; if West Ham are to stay up, someone needs to be that spark, like Tevez from a few years ago. [Summerville] has that quality. He has that sort of – in the nicest possible way – arrogance on the ball, picking it up in positions where he can make something happen.”

A former teammate of Tevez’s in claret and blue, Bobby Zamora wonders if Summerville made the wrong call when streaking away on the counter attack in stoppage time. He played in Jarrod Bowen, rather than the overlapping El Hadji Malick Diouf, and saw the captain blaze over.

On a day of near misses, Summerville forced Djordje Petrovic into a save only minutes after kick off, had one effort deflect onto the roof of the net, and witnessed another chance slip away as Callum Wilson’s through ball got caught up in his feet.

“That could have been the difference,” Redknapp says. “That extra second [Wilson delays] just stops the momentum he was looking for. [Wilson] waits too long, the ball gets behind him, and he can’t quite get it out of his feet.”

Carlos Tevez of West Ham United celebrates scoring his team's first goal from the penalty spot during the Barclays Premiership match between Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United at Ewood Park on March 17, 2007 in Blackburn, England.

January signing Taty Castellanos embraced those Carlos Tevez comparisons when one Argentine followed in the footsteps of another. Had Castellanos’ audacious overhead kick located the top corner of Petrovic’s goal, this would have been a very fitting tribute to one of his nation’s most feted footballing sons.

“I think we played well and competed well against a tough team,” said Nuno, West Ham racking up an XG of 3.15 but failing to break the deadlock. “Bournemouth are a tough side. We had chances and a lot of situations, but overall, the team competed really well.

“We were solid. Overall we played well, defended well, created problems, and made chances.

“We had a couple of situations that required better decisions; we had a lot of players in the box waiting for that final pass. That is just the players’ anxiety to score. It’s important that we keep creating these situations, and the goals will come.

“We are confident. We know this is the way [forward]. Unfortunately, some results are not coming our way right now, but the boys are on it.”
