why dont people see, for Chelsea this is there GUY, they will try to defend him no matter what. they can't bare the thought of a player being mentioned better than him. The like of Maldini, nesta, stam have all said VVD is the very best. even rio (when put on a lie detector, and people asked him if vvd is better). so am i going to listen to the best defenders in the worlds opinion, or Cundy, ohara or chelsea fans. GET OUT OF HERE. terry clearly better career and more successful, but player for player in their prime. u always picking VVD first. people seem to forget he was so good, that folks started to count if players ever went past him. forget any other stat.
It’s not even close , vvd miles ahead of Terry . Imagine Terry been asked to defend a high line on the halfway line with fullbacks further ahead alongside attackers . Terry been asked to even defend one on one or spraying 40/50 yard passes or bringing the ball out from the back is comical . He’d be torn apart week after week by inside forwards now coming at him from all angles . Vvd could comfortably do what Terry did , winning duels he’s miles ahead of Terry , on the ball miles ahead . Vvd would be even better been asked to basically man mark one forward in his penalty box which is all Terry did

Impossible to compare eras. Everyone mentioned is/was world class. I would have Terry nowhere near the top based on his horrible judgement with teammates off the pitch.

Terry played in an era where most teams played with two up front and he played against top class strikers every week. VVD only plays against top class strikers now and again. Terry although less mobile is a better defender than VVD all day long!
I'd have JT , 💯 a TOTAL Warrior , he'd put his life on the line for his team …. JT was my favourite player OUTSIDE United, would've loved him at United ! And i met him in 2005/06 when Chelsea beat Real Betis at The Bridge , the team signed my Uncles 50th Birthday, permission given by Jose Mourinho, stood and chatted to JT down to earth bloke … And ironically he asked me who I support i said United and he winked & smiled ….

I can't think of a striker or forward that would rather play against Van Dijk than Terry.
I'm a Liverpool fan i my vote is Virg. He has had to play alongside Robbo, TAA and players like Konate. Robbo and TAA were very attacking plus a high line makes it harder now. Terry had the comfort of a Mourinho team with defensive solidity from Cole, ivanovic, carvalho, essien, make makelele.
It's 433 now not 442. So it's 3 attackers against the back 4 rather than 2. You'd regularly hear old full backs like Neville talk about Rio making him cover for him and "tuck in". Virgil hasn't had that with Robbo and Trent.
But i accept that I may be biased and that more neutrals would vote Terry.

It’s slightly offensive that Terry is compared to VVD I agree. VVD far superior, 97 pts and only losing 1 game all season at the champions and WON the CL in the same season getting MOM in the final and winning UEFA men’s player of the year and coming 2nd by less than 20 points in the Balon dor rankings to Messi. The following season he backed it up by getting 99 points and winning the title, the earliest it had ever been won and got the 2nd highest points tally ever. John Terry always had elite CB partners with him, VVD has never had anyone consistent with him in his time at Liverpool as Matip, Gomez and Lovren and konate have all been injury prone. VVD has been the benchmark for nearly 10 years now so this longevity nonsense doesn’t wash. Terry also never led his team to the champions league, he bottled it in Moscow and was suspended for Munich cause he kneed someone in the backside. He’s remembered for going full kit after Lampard and Drogba and co won him his champions league medal. VVD could’ve played next to Carvalho and been even better but could Terry have played next to Lovren and won the individual accolades VVD has.
