Cllr Farquhar served for 15 years in the Territorial Army, starting as a Rifleman, and rising to the rank of Captain.
Cllr Farquhar said “I am honoured to have been selected for the position and to represent veterans of the armed forces not just within the council but in a wider context. This is a position of trust where I can advocate for all former veterans.
“Amongst service men and women, there is a comradery and fellowship built through shared adversity in training and serving.
“I want to harness this in my new role as Armed Forces Champion; making sure regular personnel, reservists, veterans, families and the bereaved all feel a close part of our community.
“The transferable skills former service personnel bring to any organisation is invaluable and deserving of the support offered by Covenant.
“Having had the honour as Vice Chairman in 2019 of signing the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of BCP I’m proud of our continued commitment to our veterans.”
Cllr Millie Earl, Leader of BCP Council, said, “It is very important that the council recognises and remembers the work and sacrifices made by the armed forces community of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
“George is already very active in supporting veterans and military charities in the area and he will bring his skills, knowledge and experience to help all those who serve or have served, and their families across our area.
“I would like to thank Cllr Paul Slade for all the work he has done over the last few years as Armed Forces Champion.”
