In the 1999 FA Cup match between Arsenal and Sheffield United, a Sheffield player was injured, so they kicked the ball out for treatment. Per sportsmanship, Arsenal should've returned possession via throw-in.

Instead, new signing Nwankwo Kanu (unaware of the etiquette) chased the throw-in, crossed to Marc Overmars, who scored the winner.

Arsène Wenger, Arsenal's manager, deemed it unfair and offered a replay. It happened, and Arsenal won 2-1 again. A classy move in football history!

I had completely forgotten that Kanu didn’t actually score the goal. Weird how the African player seemed to get all of the blame.

I was there and I also thought it had just been hoofed out of touch by the goalkeeper. The GK could have side footed out of play close by to be clear of the intention. Others disagreed tho and in the aftermath it was clear that most of the arsenal players realised and only a few didn’t

    What a man Arsene was.

Can’t believe he got all that shit from managers in the league because he didn’t want to have a beer with them after a game (he said he preferred wine).

Even Bruce’s comments along the lines of “never seen anything like this in this country before” has undertones of something else….
