Spearheaded by Martine Whittle, operations manager at Old Town Infant School & Nursery, the ‘discovery garden’ project was launched in the hope to transform a disused but maintained space behind the school’s hall.
Many of the students live in flats or apartments and staff want their children have as much access to outdoor space as they can.
Mrs Whittle said: “This new area will enable the children to explore and discover nature, have a quiet space to read and also grow plants. Part of the design will include pebbles painted by all the children in school as a lasting reminder of those who have been part of the Old Town School community.
“Unfortunately, school funds do not cover such improvements and so a group of enthusiastic staff and volunteers have created a working party to organise fundraising events.”
Staff have set up a JustGiving page with the goal of raising £1000 to complete the garden.
The school is also hosting a ‘table top’ sale event on February 28 to continue its fundraising efforts.
