Two Premier League sides looking to regain momentum meet at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday evening, as Sunderland welcome defending champions Liverpool. The Black Cats and the Reds clash just over two months following their 1-1 stalemate at Anfield, where a late own goal from Nordi Mukiele rescued a point for Arne Slot’s side.

Liverpool appeared on course for a vital three points going into the closing stages against Manchester City on Sunday, with Dominik Szoboszlai’s excellent free kick giving them the lead. Yet Bernardo Silva’s close-range strike and a dramatic injury-time penalty from Erling Haaland saw the visitors claim a 2-1 triumph.

Conceding late has become a recurring issue for Liverpool this term; they have now shipped four 90th-minute winners in the division-equalling the record for any team in a single season, alongside Watford, West Ham, and Southampton, with 13 fixtures remaining.

This recent setback represents Liverpool’s eighth Premier League defeat this season-double the number from their title-winning campaign last term. Currently sitting sixth in the standings and five points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, Arne Slot confronts a significant battle to qualify for Champions League football.

The Reds have secured just one victory in their previous seven league games, making every point essential moving forward. They can, though, draw confidence from their 19-match unbeaten streak against promoted sides in the top tier.

Liverpool’s struggles on their travels continue to be a worry, having secured just two victories in their previous 10 Premier League away fixtures. The Reds have shipped 21 goals in 12 matches away from Anfield—surpassing even bottom club Wolves (20).

Interestingly, all three of Liverpool’s top-flight losses to Sunderland have occurred on the road, though they haven’t tasted defeat in their last five trips to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland, on the other hand, have been inconsistent, managing three victories, four stalemates, and three losses across their last 10 league outings, with their previous five results alternating between wins and defeats. Following an emphatic 3-0 home triumph over Burnley, they were on the receiving end of a 3-0 thrashing at Arsenal last weekend, slipping to ninth place but remaining within three points of Liverpool.

Regis Le Bris’s men will be relieved to be back at the Stadium of Light, where they’ve collected 72.2% of their Premier League points this campaign—a home record surpassed only by Arsenal, Man City, and Man United. Impressively, Sunderland are the sole Premier League outfit yet to lose at home this season; their 12-match unbeaten run represents the longest by a newly-promoted team since Nottingham Forest’s 21-game sequence in 1977-78.

That said, Sunderland haven’t beaten Liverpool in their last 11 Premier League encounters since a 1-0 home success in March 2012. Goals have also proved elusive in this fixture, with the Black Cats finding the net just 19 times in 33 top-flight clashes against Liverpool.

Sunderland vs Liverpool Odds

Despite Sunderland’s strong home record heading into this fixture, remaining unbeaten in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light this season, it’s Liverpool who are the bookmakers’ favourites. William Hill have priced Arne Slot’s side at 3/4 odds-on as they aim to move up the Premier League standings.

At present, the Black Cats are priced at 17/5 to claim victory, whilst a draw stands at 27/10. However, some punters might be tempted by a double chance option at 21/20, given the impressive home record.
