Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United winning 2-1 away at Spurs.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion the politics entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch…
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Spurs fans, one or two Newcastle supporters also contributing (as well as the usual trolls who don’t support either team…):
‘On the plus side for Spurs fans, you will have the best stadium in The Championship.
Well played Newcastle.’
‘Newcastle can’t win away to save their lives.
Dr Spurs will see you now…’
‘Only Van de Ven would get into one of the big teams squads….not one other player would get into a top 10 team. just a thought Leicester have a nice stadium…they are heading towards league 1…the championship might not be as low as tiny tots go!’
‘Another plus side is TNT decided to give a dedicated Spurs commentary for the game. They barely mentioned anything from a Newcastle point of view.’
‘Spurs fans telling me I’d ‘thrown my money away’ putting an 18-1 bet on them getting relegated last week.
I could already cash out and quadruple my money. Worst form in the league and sinking fast, this team is relegation fodder.’
‘As a Villa fan I’m glad Ramsey is finding form for Newcastle. We’ve always known there is a quality player in him. If Newcastle can keep him fit he’ll do really well.
As for Spurs…. Hahaha.’
‘That ball for Willock was brilliant too. Can’t believe VAR ruled it out for his hairline, yet Liverpool get a 5cm allowance? Utter nonsense.’
‘5cm? Liverpool get a digital representation of 2 players in a different position to when the ball was actually played just to make it fit within 5cm.’
‘A performance with fight passion commitment and topped with a we do care attitude, could be the turning point and the performance needed to push on and show what we are capable of, proof again that Eddie Howe is the only man for the job and deserves backing not knee jerk reactions ‘
‘You’re getting far too excited over a win against one of the worst teams the league has had for 2.5 years now, saved only by the fact that the newly promoted clubs last season were so bad.
Tottenham are awful.
Newcastle fans getting over excited about beating Thomas Frank!!
BTW Tonali is leaving in the summer.’
‘Wow! Are people making excuses for why Newcastle are still rubbish despite the win?
I thought you guys were against excuses. Or is that just the one crazy guy?’
‘A win is a win, if you don’t celebrate winning then what’s the point.
Tottenham are awful, but you’ve still got to beat them.
Newcastle fans getting excited about winning a game, stop the press.’
‘Dominant by Newcastle who should have won by more. Got to worry about Spurs now who are having a terrible run with injuries.’
‘Simmons & Sarr both midfielders booked for simulation in our own half, tells you everything you need to know about the calibre of players we have at Spurs, don’t get me started on Tel, Odebert,’
‘Ah the scourge of modern football they lose the next couple and it all starts again looking from the outside in Newcastle have always thought of themselves as a big club where in reality they aren’t.’
‘Just like last year our 9Spurs) only hope of salvation is 3 teams being even worse.’
‘Well done Newcastle.
Us, its a shambles. TF is setting us up to soak up pressure in every 1st half, issue is by the 2nd the team have no rhythm or idea how to play the ball through the field and create chances.
Ok, yes there’s injuries, but the rest of the squad can’t play even basic fwd passes, crosses or trouble the keeper.
Something needs to change b4 we’re relegated, not after, sorry Thomas’
‘A player is 35+ yards away from goal and his hand is offside. Make that make sense
What advantage is he gaining ?’
‘Ramsey’s hand is not offside as you can’t score from your hand, so they spend 5minutes to manipulate the graphics to make his eyebrows offside.’
‘Is that the disallowed Willock goal? It was a sliver of his forehead. Possibly the tightest offside graphic I’ve ever seen.’
‘I do love a good cartoon graphic to prove it was offside!’
‘Looked like they couldn’t get the frame from the point of the ball leaving the players foot, there was quite a gap between foot and ball. You don’t often see that.’
‘It was a daft offside. Even the video frame rate couldn’t keep up with that margin of error. The game has gone stupid if that’s supposed to be offside.’
‘Newcastle won this far more easily than the scoreline suggests. Spurs are in a whole world of trouble.’
‘Loved all the pre-match comments questioning Howe’s team choices and one person suggesting that he chose the team to intentionally get the sack. Well – this result shows why he’s the Newcastle manager and they are not. Good win on the road.’
‘Newcastle players care about their fans, Manager, club and community.
Spurs players don’t give a damn.’
‘Do you think if Spurs go down they will rename the Big 6 the Big 5?
Or will they keep it the Big 6 and just add Newcastle in?’
