Team News

Owing to the sixth red card of his Spurs career, the fourth of his Premier League adventure and the second of his 2025-26 top-flight season, Tottenham captain Romero begins a four-game ban this week, meaning that he will also miss the imminent North London derby.

Udogie's thigh injury will also rule him out of contention too, as the defensive duo join James Maddison (knee), Dejan Kulusevski (knee), Mohammed Kudus (thigh), Rodrigo Bentancur (thigh), Ben Davies (ankle), Lucas Bergvall (ankle), Richarlison (thigh), Pedro Porro (thigh) and Kevin Danso (toe) in the overflowing infirmary.

On an increasingly rare positive note, Djed Spence will return from a calf problem in time for the visit of Newcastle, so new signing Souza may have to wait for his full Premier League debut at left-back.

Newcastle at least emerged from their most recent defeat with no new concerns on the fitness front, and neither Lewis Miley nor Anthony Gordon have been definitively ruled out of this battle.

Joelinton (groin) and Emil Krafth (knee) are expected to remain out for a little while longer, though, while Tino Livramento (thigh) and Fabian Schar (ankle) will not be back for several weeks.

Changes will certainly be afoot after Saturday's miserable showing; both Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock are likely to be sacrificed after being hauled off at half time against Brentford, while Yoane Wissa could be displaced by Nick Woltemade too.

Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:

Vicario; Gray, Dragusin, Van de Ven, Spence; Sarr, Palhinha, Gallagher; Simons, Solanke, Kolo Muani

Newcastle United possible starting lineup:

Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Ramsey; Elanga, Woltemade, Barnes

 Key lines from news conference:

  • Frank confirmed that Destiny Udogie will "out for four to five weeks", and that Kevin Danso is also ruled out with injury, but Djed Spence has returned to training with the squad.
  • Dejan Kulusevski, who has not featured this season for Spurs, will have "another appointment" as he aims to make a comeback after suffering a knee injury last season.
  • Frank says his side are "desperate" for a league win as Spurs sit six points above the relegation zone: "There is no doubt we are desperate to win games. Desperate. I am focusing on Newcastle tomorrow. That is a great opportunity ahead of us against a good team. That is the main thing."
  • On needing the fans during these desperate times: "Not everything has been perfect, but the ability to run and fight has been very good. We desperately need them because when you're in a situation when it is not going straightforward, you need the fans even more."
  • On whether Cristiano Romero is a leader or a liability: "For me, I think he is a leader. I have said it before, he is a young leader, so he is learning every day. I remember when I was 30 years old, I thought I was on top of the world. When you have a player that is playing so much with passion, then sometimes things like that can happen. Of course, he should learn from it [red card against Manchester United]."
  • On facing Newcastle: "I think every Premier League game is a battle. It is the most physical, competitive, relentless league in the world. Newcastle are very physical and intense in the way they play. It is a coach [Eddie Howe] I admire a lot. He has been part of transforming the club and making sure they didn't go down. Then you can see they have the second year they have experienced in the Champions League. It is not easy to play the Champions League and Premier League."

Match Stats

  • Spurs have lost five of their last seven Premier League games against Newcastle (W1 D1), just one fewer defeat than they’d suffered in their previous 23 against the Magpies (W13 D4 L6).
  • Against no team have Newcastle won more Premier League games overall (27, level with Aston Villa) or away from home (12, level with West Ham) than they have against Spurs.
  • Newcastle v Tottenham Hotspur is the most played Premier League fixture never to finish 0-0 (61 times), while it’s the fourth highest scoring fixture in the competition’s history (196 goals) after Liverpool v Spurs (209), Arsenal v Liverpool (199) and Liverpool v Newcastle (198).
  • Tottenham are winless in their last 11 midweek (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Premier League games (D3 L8), their longest run in the competition’s history. Their last victory was against Brentford in January 2024 (3-2).
  • Newcastle have won six of their last eight midweek (Tues, Weds, Thurs) Premier League games (D1 L1), netting 22 goals in total in these matches (2.8 per game).
  • Since winning four of their first five home Premier League matches in the 2024-25 season, Tottenham have won just four out of 26 games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (D7 L15).
  • Newcastle United have won just two of their last 15 Premier League away games (D5 L8) and have lost their last three in London since a 1-0 win at West Ham in March last season.
  • Against no side has Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon been involved in more Premier League goals than he has against Spurs (5 – 3 goals, 2 assists), with these all coming in his last four appearances against them.
  • Dominic Solanke has scored 13 goals in his last 19 home Premier League starts (4 in 6 for Bournemouth, 9 in 13 for Spurs), while he has netted in each of his last three appearances against Newcastle (4 goals).
  • Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has won six of his nine Premier League meetings with Spurs’ Thomas Frank (D2 L1), with his 2.22 points-per-game against the Dane his best against any manager he has faced more than five times.

Pundit Predictions

Paul Merson

Both Tottenham and Newcastle desperately need a response, don't they? They're not bad teams. But I feel they've both been let down at times by their best players!

There is no justification for what Cristian Romero did against Manchester United on Saturday. It was ridiculous from him to get sent off. This isn't the first time Romero has let Spurs down and as long as he keeps playing, it won't be the last either.

If the uncertainty around Sandro Tonali's future was a concern for Newcastle, now they also have to deal with his poor run of form. I also don't understand why his agent had to come out and talk publicly about his client's future in the midst of all this. It just adds more pressure on Tonali.

This game is a football pundit's nightmare. You can predict one thing and the result could really embarrass you in the end! I can definitely see goals here, but I'm going for a draw.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Newcastle United

Chris Sutton

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero let his manager down with his red card against Manchester United, and now he is facing a four-game ban.

It's fine for Romero to be a motor mouth on social media, calling the club's recruitment "disgraceful", but he clearly needs to concentrate on his own game because he has been wild in the challenge again.

For a manager like Thomas Frank, who is under pressure, that is the last thing you need.

Poor old Eddie Howe is feeling the heat at Newcastle too, though. We had callers in to 606 at the weekend saying it is time for a change – my reaction was 'what!?'.

I really don't get that thinking at all, and not just because Howe's the guy who ended their long wait for a trophy, less than a year ago.

His squad is stretched now because of the Champions League and their run to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, and he also had everything around Alexander Isak's exit to deal with at the start of the season, when it wasn't his doing.

Howe just hasn't been able to replace Isak, either. Yoane Wissa has taken a while to get up and running and Nick Woltemade is very different to Isak in that he likes to come to the ball all the time.

People are saying a change of voice might help, but what about backing the guy who has given you so much happiness? I don't understand why you'd want him out.

This is a very difficult game to predict for various reasons, but we do know Spurs are poor at home and Newcastle aren't great away.

I still think someone will win it, but I am going to sit in the middle anyway, and go for a draw.

Sutton's prediction: 1-1

  1. 1-0 Spurs

    Penalty – long overdue.

Not beaten the Magpies in last 7 games – long overdue.

Not won at home in the league in 2 entire months – long overdue.

It’s practically guaranteed. Don’t you worry about it.

  2. Who’s looking forward to another loss with zero pressure put on Frank’s job afterwards? I know I am!

  3. I was feeling optimistic until I saw Danso is injured and Thomas Frank used the word desperate about 23 times in his press conference.

  4. 12 days off after this match, it’d be nice to enter this extended period before our next match with a win.

  5. We lose the battle in midfield and they score 2 easy goals

Attack is “Unleashed” in the second half and we try really hard until our legs fall off around minute 70

Frank reminds us that we are a shit club and takes a sip out of his Arsenal mug
