Arne Slot is facing a selection crisis when Liverpool take on Sunderland on Wednesday night. The Reds make that trip to the Stadium of Light on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick fired the Reds ahead, but City then kept themselves in the title race with goals in the final six minutes from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland’s penalty. And the drama wasn’t over there, as Szoboszlai was given his marching orders in stoppage time.
That means the midfielder is now facing a spell on the side-lines due to suspension so, with that in mind, we have rounded up the latest Liverpool and suspension and injury news ahead of the game against the Black Cats.

Szoboszlai will serve a one-match ban in the Premier League when Liverpool make their journey to the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night. He will be able to return to the matchday for the FA Cup game against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
Possible return date: February 14
Joe Gomez
Arne Slot said, after the defeat to City, that he doesn’t expect Gomez to return for their match on Wednesday night. He said: “To be honest, I don’t expect Joe back for Wednesday, but you never know. Then he is back from being out for three weeks, would you play him now? I have to make that decision.
“Let’s see what decision we make. We have other players that can play that position, as well.”
Possible return date: Unknown
Jeremie Frimpong
Frimpong has been absent since pulling minutes into the Champions League game against Qarabag, due to a muscle injury. Slot dosen’t believe he will be able to call on the Netherlands international on Wednesday night.
“Jeremie for sure not,” said the Reds boss. “We knew that when he got injured, it was a few weeks.”

Alexander Isak
Isak remains out as he recovers from surgery on an ankle injury that included a fractured fibula. Providing an update on the forward last month, Slot said: “He’s not even on the pitch yet. I think it’s called a walker, he’s just out of his walker, so that tells you that he’s not on the pitch and not expecting him on the pitch today or tomorrow in terms of his recovery work. That’s going to take a while before he’s back, as we knew.”
Possible return date: Before the end of the season
Giovanni Leoni
The teenage centre-back is not expected back until next season after suffering a campaign-ending ACL injury on debut and undergoing surgery in September.

Conor Bradley
Bradley is also not expected to play again for Liverpool this season after suffering a knee injury in the draw with Arsenal last month, and then undergoing surgery.
Possible return date: Next season
Stefan Bajcetic
Bajcetic is yet to play in the 2025-26 season due to injury. Speaking last month, Slot said: “He’s not training yet. So, he constantly gets close to the team and then he has a little setback and then comes close and has a little setback, so we’re hoping and expecting to have him very soon, again.
“But at that moment of time he trains with us again, then he’s been out for six, seven, eight months [with] no first-team training. So, as much as I’d like to have him back, we have to manage the expectations with him, as well.”
Possible return date: Unknown
Jayden Danns
Danns’ only senior appearance came as a substitute in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton at Anfield – back in September. The forward suffered a suspected hamstring problem during a Premier League 2 fixture against Ipswich Town in September and has been side-lined since.
Possible return date: Unknown
