International rugby in Edinburgh and Glasgow, it does attract a “certain type” of clientele.

Nope. We’re all Scottish, no matter colour creed or religion.

I don’t celebrate us losing but it’s a Tory sport for tories so zero interest in supporting them.

I don’t think Scottish football fans really care much about the Irish rugby team

The rugby team is all Ireland. Some people on both sides of the border don’t like that.

It’s brilliant. Daft not to get on board with it. We’re generally one of the best team in the world!
And the national anthem at the rugby eclipses football every time.
Oh and ye can get pissed

Rugby is a game for public schoolboys & farmers in the borders.
Couldn’t give less of a toss about the sport or indeed the national team win/lose or draw…

Irish football fan here.
It’s not the same for Ireland either. Couldn’t care less about rugby.

I’m from the west coast and football is where my heart is. However I live on the east coast now and enjoy the 6 nations and world cups. Used to say “the egg chasers” and all that nonsense but actually it’s a good watch. Don’t like all the it’s for tories and it’s only for posh folk. All nonsense from people who haven’t really dipped their toe in. It’s generally just normal folk. So I do want Scotland to win. In both sports.

I always want Scotland to do well in whatever sports they compete in.

I doubt this is much of a thing in Ireland beyond a handful of weirdos on X to be honest.

I think it’s different in Ireland as Irish rugby gets more funding than football, so there’s a constant frustration from football fans there and perhaps a chip on their shoulder.
That’s not the case in Scotland, we’re pissed off with our football authorities for reasons that don’t involve rugby at all.

Not a fan of Rugby particularly but don’t bear it any Ill will either. Always good to see Scotland do well no matter what.

Football fans hating rugby is such a one sided beef. It’s like folk from Glasgow moaning about Edinburgh all the time.
In both cases, its a reaction to snobbery they made up in their own heads.

There’s a staunch rugby crowd who won’t see anything beyond rugby.
There’s a staunch football crowd who won’t see anything beyond football.
And then in the middle there’s a sizeable chunk of people who just enjoy sport and can happily watch both.
I used to find myself in the staunch football crowd, but over the last 10 years I’ve found myself drifting more in to the middle group. I’m still a football guy at heart – but I can enjoy watching the rugby, despite not knowing half of the rules.

Rugby fans always put themselves on a pedestal over football fans so that certainly doesn’t help at all.

Don’t know about the rest of Ireland but rugby fans in Dublin have a reputation for being posh wankers, the national team itself also have had some criticism from people that have run into them in everyday life.
Is there similar in Scotland ?

There’s very little overlap between Scottish football and rugby fans. Same can be said for players too tbh. Both from different parts of the country.

I’ve tried, but I just can’t get excited about rugby.

No chance. Anytime Scotland is competing in any sport, everyone from Scotland wants them to do well.
Does anyone remember staying up late to watch the curling at the olymics 😂. I know GB, but they were all Scottish

I’d like it if the Scottish rugby team won the World Cup, but I don’t really care. The last time I got emotionally involved in a rugby match was when we blew it against Australia.
Bit strange as I was considerably better at rugby at school.

I don’t think we have the same thing, non-rugby fans may be happy to see Scotland win but they’re not too arsed about it.
That said, I think it’s fucking hilarious how whiny some rugby fans get when their team loses. They cannot handle the loss so they lash out at some *other* thing – some kids booing when your guy was kicking a penalty or a conversion, the opposition fans being disrespectful, whatever. It happens in football but not to the extent that it happens in rugby. I remember I went with my Aussie mate to a test at Murrayfield way back in the 2000s, we beat them and he would not shut up about how he’d rather lose than to play/behave like Scotland did.
