Manchester United’s March schedule has been altered as the Premier League continues to juggle domestic fixtures around European commitments, with changes now confirmed that will directly affect newly appointed interim boss Michael Carrick’s side during a key stage of the season.
As the campaign enters a decisive period, broadcasters and competition organisers have been forced into further adjustments, particularly involving clubs still active on the continental stage.
Despite not being in Europe due to their Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur last season, United are still impacted as one Old Trafford fixture is now moved from its original spot.
It has been announced on Manchester United’s website that the home match against Aston Villa will now be played on Sunday 15 March, with kick-off scheduled for 14:00 GMT.
The adjustment has been made due to Villa’s involvement in the Europa League, with Unai Emery’s side in action in Europe earlier that week.
The rescheduled fixture adds further intrigue to United’s run-in with the visitors currently sitting just above Michael Carrick’s newly rejuvenated side in the Premier League table and having edged the reverse meeting earlier in the campaign.
The last time the two clubs faced, Aston Villa took the lead through a remarkable Morgan Rogers goal before Matheus Cunha equalised right before the half-time interval.
Morgan Rogers then won Aston Villa the game in a narrow 2-1 win at Villa Park where Bruno Fernandes picked up a rare injury.
Ruben Amorim’s hopes for his job to be safe was damaged that game and was only seen in the dugout three more times before eventually being sacked in January,
With UEFA Champions League qualification potentially at stake, especially with the increased likelihood of a minimum of 5 English clubs in the competition next season, the revised date could yet prove significant as the season reaches its final stretch.
