Newcastle United have already banked £46.7m from their participation in this season’s Champions League, with potential for significantly more earnings in the latter stages of the competition.

Eddie Howe’s men are facing a two-legged play-off against Qarabag for the right to play either Chelsea or Barcelona in the last 16, with the first leg in Azerbaijan on February 18.

The Magpies will favourites to progress, after losing just two of their group stage games, to Barca and Marseille, and narrowly missing out on a place in the top eight.

Now the highly respected Swiss Ramble football finance blog has released the prize money gained so far by every club in this season’s Champions League, with United’s share of the pot broken down.

Newcastle received the least of the five Premier League clubs taking part, as clubs with a stronger European record over the last 10 years receiving more in what’s known as the ‘value pillar’.

This is determined by ranking clubs based on the value of a country’s media market, combined with individual clubs’ performances in Europe over the last five and 10 years in UEFA’s coefficient rankings, and equates to 35 per cent of the total amount shared with the 36 clubs.

Each club in the league phase receive £16.1m before any performance-based prize money is allocated.

Newcastle’s four wins and two draws has earned them £16.6m, with £14m from the value pillar adding to a total of £46.7m.

That’s dwarfed by the £84m earned by Manchester City and Liverpool, with Arsenal receiving £83.1m.

Chelsea’s total came in at £79.6m with Tottenham’s thought to be £72.7m.
