Kobbie Mainoo has been sent a message by Alex Iwobi after an incident between the two during Manchester United’s Premier League win over Fulham. Both players started the 3-2 victory for Michael Carrick’s side, with Benjamin Sesko scoring a late winner.

Goals from Casemiro and Matheus Cunha had put United in front but a Raul Jimenez penalty and Kevin worldie brought the visitors level with just minutes to play. Second-half substitute Sesko stole the points, however, with an excellent finish into the top corner.

Those three points saw Carrick maintain his 100 winning start as interim coach with big victories over Arsenal and Manchester City coming before that. Amad and Bryan Mbeumo returning from AFCON alongside Harry Maguire getting back to full fitness have been key to those results.

Mainoo getting reintegrated into the starting XI has also made a huge difference with Bruno Fernandes moved into his more natural attacking midfield role as a result. Alongside Casemiro, the 20-year-old has been showing his quality in recent weeks with Iwobi still feeling the effects of his impact from Sunday’s game.

During his recent YouTube video, he jokingly said: “Shout out Kobbie Mainoo but Kobbie man.. you absolutely finished my hand. This guy has Ghanaian strength!” While speaking, Iwobi lifted up the two smallest fingers on his right hand to show them strapped together.

It is unclear exactly what Mainoo did to Iwobi for him to injure his fingers but judging by the latter’s comments, it certainly seems as though it was during a battle for possession that the United man won.

This time last month, a January loan seemed likely for Mainoo with Amorim handing him just over 200 minutes of Premier League football this season. Ever since the former United boss admitted he was directly competing for a spot in the team with Fernandes, he rarely featured.

Napoli were showing a strong interest in taking him on a temporary basis with the Italian champions already employing Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund.

Now, a contract extension is far more likely than a departure this summer with talks ready to begin. The midfielder has 18 months remaining on his current deal and if Carrick remains in charge, he will almost certainly want an agreement to be reached.

The 44-year-old spoke about Mainoo in a recent press conference when addressing the midfield partnership he is developing with Casemiro.

He said: “Sometimes we can pigeonhole players quite quickly but it’s not always the case.

“Kobbie can play different roles within that, but definitely with Cassie in the middle, the last couple of games they’ve had a really good pairing and been a big part of controlling the team.”
