Kayleigh Griffiths said that she goes to JD Gyms in Bitterne at 6am five days a week but has “serious and ongoing safety concerns” about the lack of lighting in the car park.
The 40-year-old said: “When it’s nighttime, it’s pitch black up there. You can’t even see when you’re parking, never mind the safety issue.
“It’s just not good enough really because it’s just so dark up there and anything could happen. There’s no witnesses, there’s no light, and there’s no cameras either.”
Kayleigh said she has raised the issue with management at JD Gyms on a number of occasions but claims nothing has been done to resolve it.
She said: “Members have said they feel vulnerable walking to and from their cars, as visibility is non-existent and the area is already quite secluded.
“Although I and others have continually highlighted the risks, the issue has repeatedly been treated as non-urgent by the gym’s management, despite its long history and clear impact on member safety.
“The lack of meaningful action over such an extended period is deeply concerning.”

Kayleigh said she joined the gym shortly after it opened in the summer of 2024 and claimed the lighting problems have been ongoing since the beginning.
She said she has considered changing gyms as a result of the repeated lighting failures.
She added: “Once or twice you can forgive, but this is an ongoing issue, but staff really don’t seem bothered.
“They do have a duty of care to keep the people on their premises safe.”
Kayleigh said the lights occasionally come back on but claimed they are off most of the time, which she said makes her believe they are being turned off intentionally to save money.
JD Gyms have been approached for a comment, but did not respond at the time of publication.
