Manchester City vs Newcastle preview

Manchester City blew a 2-0 lead in Sunday’s Premier League draw at Tottenham and they are protecting the same advantage in Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle.

City looked in total control at half-time against a sluggish Spurs side in front of a disgruntled fanbase at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, they fell apart after the break and were fortunate not to lose after a stunning turnaround from the hosts.

There has been speculation over Pep Guardiola’s future at the club – bet365 offer 6-4 that he is in charge on the first day of next season – but one thing City fans can rely on is beating Newcastle on their own turf.

They have won their last 11 home matches against the Magpies by an aggregate score of 37-3 and should put Sunday’s shocking second half behind them.

Newcastle have struggled on their travels all season so backing City to be leading at half-time and full-time looks a solid bet.

The EFL Cup holders managed only two shots on target in the first leg, when Antoine Semenyo scored for City early in the second half and Rayan Cherki doubled their advantage in the ninth minute of added time.

Cherki’s goal was a hammer blow to Newcastle’s hopes of retaining the trophy and their tough recent schedule may well catch up with them in Manchester.

In the past seven days they have drawn 1-1 at Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain before a 4-1 defeat at Premier League champions Liverpool.

Key midfielder Joelinton remains sidelined and Bruno Guimaraes, who missed the PSG and Liverpool games, is unlikely to feature.

City have been leading at half-time in 12 of their last 13 home fixtures and, after their chastening draw at Tottenham, a more ruthless display is expected against the weary Magpies.

Semenyo’s sizzling scoring form should continue

After scoring in four of his last six league appearances for Bournemouth, Semenyo’s hot streak has continued since his January move to Manchester.

Playing in an advanced role alongside Erling Haaland, Semenyo has struck in four of his first five games for City including the first-leg opener at St James’ Park and a goal at Spurs on Sunday.

Back Burn to bag an early booking

Dan Burn has been in the firing line since recovering from a rib injury, returning to action against PSG and Liverpool.

The Newcastle defender was booked in both of this term’s league meetings with Liverpool, as well as September’s home defeat to Arsenal, and he could be drawn into a rash early challenge by City’s classy attackers.

Manchester City vs Newcastle Bet BuilderManchester City to be leading at half-time

The Citizens have been blasting out of the blocks in home matches this season and they led 2-0 at Tottenham on Sunday before capitulating in the second half.

Under 3.5 goals

Newcastle have failed to score on any of their last seven visits to Manchester City and the first leg at St James’ Park yielded a total of just six shots on target.

Harvey Barnes to have two or more shots

Newcastle winger Barnes has had 16 shots at goal in his last five league matches and he scored both goals in November’s 2-1 win over the Citizens.
