Aston Villa and Liverpool will hold talks over the future of Harvey Elliott after the transfer deadline has passed, according to the Daily Mail.

Villa completed a deal on deadline day in the summer to bring the England Under-21 international to the Midlands on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy for £35m if he made 10 appearances this season.

However, Unai Emery has made it clear that he has no intention of signing the player permanently, which has seen him left out of match day squads for much of the campaign so far.

Elliott had been expected to leave Villa during the winter transfer window, but because he had already featured for Liverpool earlier in the season, it meant that he can only join a club who are playing on a different calendar, like the MLS.

However, a move hasn’t materialised and Elliott has featured in the last two matches for Villa, starting in the Europa League win over RB Salzburg and coming on as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Brentford on Sunday in the Premier League.

Emery confirmed that nothing had changed over his plans for Elliott, but praised his professionalism, and it has now emerged that the clubs will hold talks after deadline day to solve his future, with the current situation not suiting either club or the player.

It’s mooted that the obligation to buy could be turned into an option to convince Villa to use Elliott more often this season, or that the number of games needed to make the deal permanent could be raised too.
