What is expected from Manchester City on the final day of the January transfer window after a busy month for Hugo Viana

Middlesbrough’s Sverre Nypan
Manchester City are set to complete two moves before the transfer window closes as they wait on interest in Kalvin Phillips. While there will be no deals to match the significance of the business the club have already done bringing in Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi and selling Oscar Bobb, there is still work to be done.
Sverre Nypan is expected to be the only incoming with City ready to terminate the teenager’s loan at Middlesbrough and keep him at the Etihad for the second half of the season. The £12.5m signing hasn’t had the minutes expected in the Championship and City believe he would develop more if he was training with Pep Guardiola and his players every day instead.
Nypan will not be eligible for the Carabao Cup and is unlikely to be named in the Champions League squad unless City can find room in their quota of foreign players. He will, however, be able to feature in the Premier League and FA Cup if selected by Guardiola.

Divine Mukasa will complete a loan deal for the rest of the season to Leicester City, who are currently struggling in the Championship. The Foxes sacked manager Marti Cifuentes in January and are 16th in the table so will be hoping Mukasa can bring some of the talent that has earned him appearances at City this season.
The only other talking point for deadline day is Phillips, the former England midfielder who has been forgotten at the Etihad after a nightmare move in 2022. Phillips has had interest in this window from a number of teams, yet none of that has yet converted into a concrete offer – either loan or permanent. Unless there is late movement, Phillips will remain at the Etihad for another six months despite having no hope of playing for the first team.
The bulk of City’s business has already been completed this month with Semenyo and Guehi brought into the squad. The £82.5m signings, offset in part by Bobb’s £27m sale, have already had a significant impact on the first team and both started at Spurs on Sunday in the 2-2 draw.
