Manchester United Pre-Season Tour: Premier League Summer SeriesPhoto by Ash Donelon/Manchester United via Getty ImagesDiego Leon praises Lisandro Martinez

Diego Leon has struck up a friendship with fellow South American defender Lisandro Martinez since joining the club.

Leon and Martinez both travelled on the club’s 2025 pre-season tour, even though the latter was still recovering from an ACL injury.

Martinez has now recovered and is re-established as a regular starter for Manchester United, producing consistently impressive performances.

He was excellent against Fulham, making a vital interception in the second half to deny a goalscoring opportunity, and impressing with his leadership right up until the full-time whistle.

Leon posted a message to Martinez after the game on Instagram, writing: “Que jugador 🤯🤯👏”, translated as “What a player”.

Martinez had captioned his post simply: “Theatre of Dreams,” sharing an image where he was sliding in to make a tackle.

He is one of Manchester United’s best players right now, and it is no surprise that a young player like Diego Leon is using him as an inspiration.

Diego Leon on track

Diego Leon joined Manchester United from Cerro Porteno last summer and he has been playing for the under-21s.

Leon has already made his senior Paraguay international debut, and he is regarded at Carrington to be ahead of schedule in his development.

There had been question over whether Leon might go out on loan, and while this could still happen on transfer deadline day, Patrick Dorgu’s injury means United lack cover for Luke Shaw at left-back.

Leon might still end up playing alongside Martinez before the season is done.
