O2 has announced the launch of its next-generation 5G Standalone network in key Dorset towns, including Bournemouth, Poole, Dorchester, Swanage and Christchurch.
The upgrade promises faster, more reliable coverage and improved connectivity for users with compatible devices.
According to the mobile operator, more than 380,000 residents across these areas now have access to the advanced network.
Dr Robert Joyce, director of mobile access engineering at O2, said: “Our new 5G Standalone network is now live in Dorset, providing an impressive upgrade for local people and businesses and creating new opportunities in and around the county.
“We are investing every single day to improve our mobile network and provide a more reliable experience for our customers, futureproofing our connectivity and paving the way for exciting innovations that lie ahead.”
The 5G Standalone technology is built entirely on new infrastructure, unlike earlier versions that depended on existing 4G networks.
O2 said the new service is already improving mobile performance across the county and preparing the region for future digital growth.

Reliable and high-speed connectivity is seen as essential not only for residents but also for Dorset’s tourism sector and broader economy.
The improved mobile network will help people stay connected as they travel across the county, from major towns to rural areas and coastal destinations.
Tourism, transport and retail are among the key sectors expected to benefit from the strengthened mobile coverage.
The Dorset rollout is part of O2’s wider national programme to extend 5G Standalone services to urban centres, towns and communities across the UK.
This work is part of Virgin Media O2’s Mobile Transformation Plan, which aims to boost 4G and 5G coverage, increase network capacity in high-demand locations and address persistent connectivity issues along transport routes and in public venues.
Last year, Virgin Media O2 agreed a deal with Vodafone UK to acquire 78.8 MHz of spectrum, bringing the operator’s total spectrum holding to approximately 30 per cent of UK mobile spectrum.
The company said it is deploying the newly acquired spectrum nationwide to deliver an improved network experience for customers.
