He was beloved at Liverpool, and chose to run down his contract and leave.

He was never going to reach the level of adoration at City because they do not have a significant fanbase and nobody really values their achievements.

    At Arsenal/Chelsea he was shit

  2. I’m just not sure that’s true, when he was playing well, especially for England I think he got his flowers.

But he also has regularly received very unfair criticism both on and off the pitch for ‘reasons’.

  3. I remember nothing about him that deserves adoration.
He was an above average footballer who got well paid and played for the biggest clubs.

When I think of adoration I think of legends of the game. Cantona, Messi, Thierry Henry, Ronaldo etc

Sterling has done nothing above what he was paid to do

I think that’s actually true. I think his ability was downplayed a lot especially when certain people almost reduce his actions to that of a Pep puppet. There have been many great attackers to play for Pep but apart from Messi and lewa not one of them produced as much as Sterling. I mean 217 Ga in 339 games is ridiculous. I think he deserves more plaudits from the neutral fans.

  5. I somewhat agree with this to be honest. Sterling was genuinely world class from 2017-2020 (maybe 2021, it’s a stretch), he fell off a cliff at a faster rate than almost anyone I’ve ever seen play football.

Stuck around in the England squad for a couple years too long but for a solid few years he was fantastic.

I think the article is right, he’s seen as a bit of a meme now when he’s actually a very accomplished and decorated player.

It’s sad what has happened at Chelsea. His output is still very respectable.

  7. Dude was always a bit of a tabloid pariah and I do feel for him. Was a great player, not quite world class, for a good 5-6 years. He was often a dreadful finisher and yet somehow ended Prem seasons among the golden boot places.

Hopefully time is kind to him.

He made the mistake of leaving Liverpool for a rival club. The Liverpool fanbase and pundits never forgave him for this and spent the next few years badmouthing him online and in the media. This affected public perception of him.

Meanwhile he was doing amazing at times for City, putting up big numbers in his best seasons.

Adoration is probably hard when you’ve moved around a lot, unfortunately article is behind a paywall. He has had a great career, started very young and left Liverpool not in the greatest way. Won loads of trophies at City but not sure he’d stand out in that team. Been solid for England. The later part of his career arguably hasn’t gone to plan but overall he’s had more money and success than a lot of players.

  10. He did when he was younger, except from the media. And why should very well paid football players be adored?
