Daniel Farke is refusing to rule out more transfer business in the final days of the January window.

The Leeds United manager looks set to lose out on Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen and are facing the possibility of ending the window without adding another striker to their ranks. The club are open to signing a back-up left-back, though an attacking signing appears to be at the forefront.

Leeds are adamant on not paying more than £40m for Strand Larsen, though Crystal Palace, who have more spending room within Premier League finance regulations, are willing to pay more with a deal close to completion.

With time running out ahead of Monday’s deadline, Farke says he is reluctant to speak about his transfer plans in public out of fears that this would then bump up the price tag for players they may approach.

Farke said: “I think it’s our responsibility to give ourselves the best possible squad for the run in. But we can allow ourselves to be picky because we are on a really good path.

“We won’t extend the size of our squad. But apart from this, I don’t want to speak too much publicly about this. In general, the market is always a bit more tricky because there are limited options.

“And the club knows exactly what I think, what we need to do during this window, and they are aware about this. But before the window has ended, I’m not willing to give too much away.

“If I mentioned this, then a potential club where we are in negotiations also knows this. It means the price goes up.

“So it makes no sense right now to mention in which position we are, perhaps desperate to do something or want to do something. So for that, there will be no public statements from myself about any position.”

Asked further why he felt this window was tricky, Farke added: “What makes this year more challenging is that we are playing on Premier League level and are in a good position so it’s not easy to find players who improve us.

“Sometimes it could cost lots of money. The problem is that everyone knows this, you could pay over the price for players – I don’t want us to do this. We don’t want to risk what we could do in the future. A tricky situation but this is normally a good sign.

“The club knows exactly what we need. We are in a very relaxed situation. Happy to have Facundo [Bonanotte] with us.”

Meanwhile, striker Lukas Nmecha will miss Saturday’s game against Arsenal due to a hamstring problem. He is only due to be out for one match ahead of next Friday’s clash with Nottingham Forest and so transfer plans will not be imapcted by his setback.

Defenders Gabriel Gudmundsson and Jaka Bijol are set to miss this weekend’s game with respective ongoing adductor and hamstring injuries. Gudmundsson might be back for next week’s Friday night clash with Nottingham Forest, but Bijol is expected to be out for a little while longer.

Daniel James has fully returned to first-team training, having been out since late November with a hamstring injury. He is in contention to make the squad, though Farke says he will be sensible with his return.
