Newcastle United star Joe Willock was the toast of the dressing room last night at Parc de Princes after his headed equaliser earned an impressive point against the champions of Europe.

Willock popped up in first half injury time to beat Matvei Safonov and stun the Paris St-Germain ultras with his first of the campaign. It was Willock’s first goal since the brace he netted away to Birmingham City in the FA Cup fourth round last term.

In total, Willock has scored 19 goals for Newcastle since first arriving on loan from Arsenal before sealing a £25million move in 2021. Despite linked with moves to Crystal Palace and Leeds, Eddie Howe has no intention of selling the midfielder who has a contract until 2027.

Howe has never stopped believing in Willock and told Chronicle Live last night in Paris: “Joe got the goal, and it was Joe Willock of old.

“He was always a scorer of big goals. I know when he first joined the club, his goal record was really strong.

“He scored a couple of goals at the start of my time at the club. I am really pleased for him, he has had a tough time with injuries.”

After the game Dan Burn admitted that Newcastle players are used to seeing moments like that from Willock in training. The London-born star is a regular goalscorer at Benton.

Howe said: “Joe has trained really well.

“He has done really well for us behind the scenes. He has just been waiting for opportunities, and today was the right time for him with his legs and ability to get up the pitch. “

And continuing the praise for Willock skipper for the night Burn said: “I thought Joe was amazing tonight. We know as a squad how good he is as player. He has had a lot of bad luck with injuries.

“But that shows the quality that he has. He has not played as many games as he would have liked but we know how good he is.”
