Manchester United are well-positioned in the Premier League following victories over Manchester City and Arsenal. Under Michael Carrick’s guidance, they are targeting a Champions League spot this season.

Securing a top four finish – or top five if England receive an additional Champions League place – would considerably boost United’s summer transfer strategy. Despite offering no European competition, the club invested over £200million last summer, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens.

Currently, acquiring a new midfielder remains the primary objective, with Elliot Anderson understood to be their preferred choice. However, now that Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation has been abandoned, the opportunity for a new left winger to join Old Trafford is greater than before.

Unexpected winger targeted

Earlier this week, we reported that United might pursue AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, with the Italian club willing to allow his departure. The Daily Mail also suggests Chelsea’s Tyrique George has emerged as a potential wide attacking choice for the summer.

The 19-year-old has featured amongst the first team at Stamford Bridge for two seasons. Last campaign, he appeared 39 times for Enzo Maresca’s squad, netting eight goals and providing 11 assists, though his playing time has been restricted this season following the arrivals of Estevao, Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho.

Carrick has deployed Patrick Dorgu at left wing with tremendous effect in his opening two matches, but the former Lecce player is now facing a spell on the treatment table. George is said to be available for departure from Chelsea and could be secured for approximately £22m, a comparable sum to what was arranged with Fulham last summer.

Martinez U-turn

Prior to Lammens’ arrival, United had spent the entire summer pursuing Emiliano Martinez. Amorim was believed to be eager to bring the Aston Villa goalkeeper to Old Trafford, before the choice was made to acquire Lammens instead.

Now, CaughtOffside have reported that United are re-evaluating its goalkeeping options, with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir anticipated to depart on permanent deals. Martinez has re-emerged as a candidate, with Villa prepared to part with him for roughly £40 million.

The Argentina international’s deal at Villa runs until 2029, putting Unai Emery’s side in a strong bargaining position. However, it remains to be seen whether they will let the shot-stopper depart.
