Unai Emery is keen to be reunited with his old Arsenal charge Matteo Guendouzi at Aston Villa and has already spoken to the midfielder about a January move, according to reports.
Guendouzi is likely to command a fee in excess of €30million (£26.5m) – around three times what Marseille paid – though the French club are very reluctant to lose one of their most important players.
Despite inconsistent form at Arsenal and some questions over his attitude, Guendouzi has developed into a key player at Marseille and even earned a place in France’s squad for the World Cup.
That said, Marseille have already secured a deal for attacking midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi and could be tempted to cash in on Guendouzi and replace him with Morocco’s breakout World Cup star Azzedine Ounahi.
Although Guendouzi clashed with current Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, he got on well with Emery and the Spanish coach has remained a big fan – even trying to sign him for Villarreal.
Both have spoken glowingly about each other since leaving north London, with Guendouzi congratulating Emery on winning the Europa League back in 2021 and writing: ‘I am honoured and proud to have had the opportunity to evolve by your side.
