Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has insisted that he is in a position to spend money this January after being asked about the £130m fortune the club picked up for Alexander Isak in the summer.

The Magpies remain in a defensive crisis, with Howe’s squad being pushed to the limit due to participation in both domestic cups and the Champions League. A defender is on the wish-list for Newcastle with Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento now facing long spells on the sidelines but Howe says a review on transfers is likely.

Howe, speaking at his Press conference ahead of the trip to Wolves, told Chronicle Live: “I don’t necessarily count the money. I will react to the information I get, and collectively we will come to the right decisions.

“I don’t think it is a case that there is a pot of money stood there somewhere. I think PSR is constantly moving and changing depending on our income.

“So lots of things affect our income. So whether we are in the Champions League, how successful we are through the season, it is constantly changing.

“You can’t ever really get one reading on it. It changes on a daily basis so we are having to react and change to that ourselves as we go through the season.

“All I can assure everybody is that there is money to spend, the club are willing to spend it, it is not a case of holding anything back. Of course we have to comply within the rules we know how important that is.”

When asked if Schar’s injury means a definite incoming new defensive target, Howe said: “All options are available to us. We’ll try to make the right decisions collectively.

“I’ve said so many times here – you’ll be bored of me saying it – there’s a lot to consider, summer activity, January activity, value for money, the right players being available, so we’ll take all that into account and try to make the right decision.”

Howe also added: “It is very fluid at the moment. We are still in that watching or holding pattern and we will see what happens in the next few weeks.”
