The Blues had signed Massimo Luongo, Nathan Broadhead and George Hirst by this stage of the 2023 January window, Jeremy Sarmiento and Lewis Travis had arrived come this point in 2024, while Ben Godfrey and Jaden Philogene were in by this date last year.

McKenna has said he would like to strengthen his squad if possible this window, and is keen to ‘add goals to the squad’, but that he doesn’t want to ‘start from scratch again’ having spent the first half of the campaign getting a new-look group up to speed.

The Blues currently sit third in the Championship table, with a game in hand, ahead of tomorrow lunchtime’s home clash with Blackburn Rovers (12.30pm).

“I don’t think there’s anything close,” said McKenna, when asked for an update on transfer incomings. “I feel sort of the same as before really. It’s not consuming my thoughts.

“I know January is a time when everybody looks at transfers and players who might come into the club but we have a good group here. It’s still a pretty big group and I’m working really hard to keep improving them and bring them together as a team.

“Of course we’ve said we want to improve the squad if we can and improve the team in different ways across the window. Discussions are being had and the recruitment team and Mark (Ashton) know where we would like to strengthen, the qualities that we’d like to bring to the group and they’re working really hard on it.

“I chip in with that process but, other than that, we’ve certainly got enough to focus on here day-to-day and you can’t take your eye off that really.

“My main focus at the moment is working really hard with these players that have brought us to this point in the season and that I believe can still improve.”
