Donyell Malen has left Aston Villa after only a year with the club to join Roma.

The Serie A side have signed Malen on loan with an option to buy. The loan fee is reported to be £1.7m, with the fee should the deal be made permanent understood to be £21.6m. That will only come into force should certain conditions are met.

Malen’s move may be a part of a swap deal, with Tammy Abraham, a Roma player currently on loan at Turkish side Besiktas, linked with a return to Villa, where he previously spent a season on loan.

Malen joined Villa in January 2025 after four years at Borussia Dortmund. The Netherlands forward made 46 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals.

Roma are fifth in Italy’s top division seven points behind leaders Inter, and visit Torino on Sunday.
