Edwards, 22, has joined the Championship side in a deal worth around £5million, having failed to make his mark during 18 months at Saints.

The former England youth international returns to QPR, where he impressed during the second half of last season, and is sure to get the minutes he desires.

Edwards was limited to two sub appearances under head coach Tonda Eckert, and has not been part of Southampton’s squad since the defeat at Norwich on December 13.

The former Peterborough defender has thanked supporters and his former Saints teammates for their support during his short time on the south coast.

On Instagram, he wrote: “My former teammates, and Saints fans, although my time at the club was short, I would like to thank you for your support throughout.

“Best wishes for the rest of the season, and we will no doubt see each other on the journey.”

Saints host QPR at St Mary’s on Tuesday, February 24, having beaten them 2-1 at Loftus Road earlier this season in Eckert’s first game in charge.
