Newcastle United put their fans through the wringer on FA Cup third round day on a day that had a bit of everything.

Harvey Barnes was fantastic, Aaron Ramsdale caused many nail-biting moments but then redeemed himself in the shoot-out and the Magpies needed some senior stars to save the day.

In a first half of few chances Wissa’s curling shot after Woltemade’s flick was saved by Dorde Petrovic at the Leazes End. Bournemouth managed to force a couple of saves from Aaron Ramsdale in the opening 45 minutes.

But the two teams went in level at the break after a relatively dull affair that lacked any FA Cup magic. However, that would change five minutes into the second half when Woltemade rolled in Harvey Barnes and the £38m man fired past Petrovic to hand Newcastle the dream start.

Bournemouth scored twice in the space of six minutes with Alex Scott and David Brooks putting the visitors 2-1 up and an away win looked on the cards. However, Sandro Tonali’s bursting run into the box resulted in Petrovic upending the Italian and Thomas Bramall pointed to the spot.

Substitute Anthony Gordon showed nerves of steel and buried his spot-kick to take it to extra time. Gordon then crossed for Barnes to head home for 3-2.

However, in first half stoppage time Newcastle collapsed again as Marcus Tavernier fired home to beat Ramsdale for a third time to take the game to a penalty shoot-out.

Here’s how the players rated against Bournemouth:

Aaron Ramsdale 8

Some shaky moments but a big save or two in extra time to deny Jimenez. And then boosted his rating with THREE penalty stops.

Kieran Trippier 6

He was never going to play much longer than an hour, but rustiness proved costly as Brooks raced away from him to score.

Malick Thiaw 8

Played through a head injury and battled hard. Kept cool after tough week to fire home from the spot.

Sven Botman 6

A tough afternoon and at fault for late equaliser as he collapsed too easily.

Tino Livramento 7

A steady enough shift until injury woe struck again. His exit coincided with Newcastle collapsing defensively.

Joe Willock 5

Not a great day in the office as one decent effort was blazed over and possession was lost as Bournemouth scored.

Sandro Tonali 8

Brought purpose to the midfield, but unfortunately, too many weren’t on the same wavelength. Played through the pain barrier and scored a vital penalty.

Jacob Ramsey 5

Didn’t grasp his chance. Lacked any real threat and did not make the most of his 63 touches.

Harvey Barnes 10

Newcastle’s most dangerous player. Opened the scoring and kept up the pursuit on the right. Fittingly rose to head home the winner at the Gallowgate End. Capped day with excellent penalty.

Nick Woltemade 6

Credit due for playing in Barnes to put Newcastle ahead but lacked presence. Horrible moment from the spot.

Yoane Wissa 5

Had early chances to put Newcastle in control but wasn’t clinical enough.

Subs

Lewis Hall 7 (for Livramento 59)

Offered some presence from the bench.

Anthony Gordon 8 (for Wissa 69)

Showed nerves of steel with the penalty. And then set up the winner for Barnes.

Lewis Miley 7 (for Trippier 69)

Rapidly clocked up more than 50 touches and kept it simple.

Joelinton 7 (for Willock 69)

Added some steel into the middle. Played in Gordon to set up the winner.

Bruno Guimaraes 6 (for Ramsey 79)

Picked up a yellow card and produced a poor penalty. A game too many.
