New speed cameras on Northam Bridge are now fully operational.

The newly installed cameras on the bridge have been undergoing calibration, but have now been brought into use.

A sign stating ‘camera not in use’ previously next to the new cameras has been removed.

Vandals cut down a newly-installed speed camera on Northam Bridge in January last year, just hours after it was put there, after incorrect social media speculation stated it used AI to police mobile phone use or seatbelt violations.

The cameras are “state of the art” and can detect both speeding offences and red-light offences.

A police spokesperson said: “The purpose of these cameras is to make our roads safer by forcing motorists to think about their speed.

“Please adhere to the speed limits on our roads; they are set for a reason, and we will take action against anyone caught speeding.”

Along with another two camera installations in other locations in the city, these replace devices that have been in use since the early 2000s.
