Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has summed up the Red Devils’ woes in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era with a wild detail about the Premier League club.

Ruben Amorim was the sixth permanent Manchester United manager to follow in Sir Alex Ferguson’s footsteps by taking his place in the Old Trafford hot seat in 2024.

However, fast-forward 14 months from his appointment under Ineos and Amorim has also become United’s sixth permanent head coach to be sacked post-Ferguson.

Amorim was offloaded from United on Monday and the Red Devils are now searching for their seventh permanent managerial appointment since 2013.

The 40-year-old ex-United manager oversaw his last match in charge of the Red Devils last Sunday, which came with a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.

Manchester United are not expected to make a permanent appointment for the vacant head coach role until the summer after Ruben Amorim left Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are relying on Darren Fletcher in the short term as caretaker manager and the future appointment of an interim head coach this season.

Peter Schmeichel pointed out the Red Devils’ huge woes with their managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as United boss at the end of the 2012-13 season.

The United legend was blown away by the “staggering stat” that no United manager since Ferguson has overseen more than 100 matches before getting sacked.

“We’ve been through a period of quite a lot of managers and only one manager by the way, since Sir Alex Ferguson, had more than 100 games, which is a staggering stat for me,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily.

“We’ve been through a period where it hasn’t worked, with big, strong-name managers come in with their systems and their ideas and it hasn’t worked.”

Peter Schmeichel’s remarks about former Man Utd managers put Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe in a position to consider

During his comments around United’s transition “period,” Schmeichel praised Darren Fletcher for the fact that the “DNA of Manchester United [is] running through his blood.”

The ‘DNA of United’ haunted the reign of Amorim after the ex-Sporting CP boss’ tactical system and comments around the youth academy raised a lot of eyebrows.

United’s identity has been carved apart in the post-Ferguson era and the closest the Red Devils felt to the club’s so-called DNA was during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign.

Schmeichel’s sentiments around going ‘back to basics’ with United and bringing in a manager who can last more than 100 matches could lay down a new foundation.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe could even look at bringing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back or Michael Carrick as an interim head coach option, but with the view of making them the next permanent manager long term.

It could be a major risk amid the instability at the Red Devils now, but the United DNA would need to come from someone closely linked with the club’s core identity.
