Newcastle United are preparing to say farewell to long serving club captain Jamaal Lascelles in the January window.

Signed for £3.5m from Nottingham Forest in 2014, the centre-back has made 248 appearances for the Magpies and served the club in both the Championship and Champions League.

Lascelles was made captain of the club in 2016 when he led the black and whites to the second tier title and has turned down chances to leave during his 12-year stay on Tyneside.

But it is understood that Lascelles may well have played his last game for Newcastle and is being held back from potential further injury to be able to complete a winter exit.

Newcastle could cash in on the ex-Forest star and shave off up to £90,000 per week from their wage bill.

Lascelles has been linked with moves to Turkey’s Super Lig and the Middle East in recent windows.

Howe said today: “He’s not training with us currently. He hasn’t felt well enough physically to train… good enough. I don’t necessarily think that he’s injured in the sense that he’s got one big injury, I just think his body’s not feeling great.

“So he’s not training with us currently. We hope that will change in the next few weeks.”But yeah, there’s a possibility that he could leave as well. Jamaal’s been an incredible servant. He’s a great leader for us behind the scenes. So, let’s wait and see what happens on his future.”

Lascelles was an unused sub at Brentford earlier in the season and one of his duties that day was to face up to the media after a poor defeat in London.

He said then: “Us as players, we know at home the fans do give us an extra five per cent. Away teams, when they come to St James’ Park, it’s their worst place to come because of the fans.

“So yeah, they do give us an extra boost. But we approach every game the same.”
