Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is open to becoming Manchester United interim head coach after direct talks on Wednesday, GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The former United striker is eyeing another return to the club, three years after he was relieved of his managerial duties at Old Trafford in November 2021.

Solskjaer is believed to have offered his services to the Red Devils following Ruben Amorim’s sacking on Monday and is among the contenders to take over until the end of the season.

United have also held talks with former midfielder Michael Carrick, who is seen as another potential candidate to succeed Darren Fletcher in the interim role.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, revealed that Solskjaer has a ‘good chance’ of returning to Old Trafford following Amorim’s departure on Monday:

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is becoming stronger and stronger in the internal ideas of Manchester United.

“Today, [there was] a face-to-face meeting between Solskjaer and Manchester United management to discuss this opportunity.

“Michael Carrick is also having conversations with Manchester United. Meanwhile, Jonny Evans has returned to the club as part of the backroom staff to help Darren Fletcher today on the touchline in the Premier League.

“So it’s going to be a huge moment for Man United. I can confirm to you that the feeling is quite good around Solskjaer.

“He’s ready to take the job. He’s ready to return to Man United. He’s ready to accept any condition in terms of financials, in terms of contract, in terms of the length of the contract, Ole is ready.

“And so conversations are going quite well. Again, let’s wait in terms of timing for Manchester United to make a final decision, but there is a good chance to see Solskjaer back to the club after he offered himself to Manchester United.”

United drew 2-2 with Burnley in their first match under Fletcher, who instantly opted for a change in formation, reshaping the Red Devils into a 4-2-3-1.

Fletcher is expected to retain his role when United next host Brighton in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, with any new appointment potentially taking place next week.

Solskjaer spent almost three years as Man United head coach from December 2018 until November 2021, winning 92 of his 168 games in charge.

During that period, he also recorded United’s first back-to-back top-four league finishes since Sir Alex Ferguson’s era and reached the 2021 Europa League final.

United fired Solskjaer following a difficult start to the 2021/22 season, when they won just seven of their 17 games across all competitions.

Solskjaer, labelled as ‘unbelievable’ by Harry Maguire, has been without a club since leaving Turkish side Besiktas in August after just eight months in charge.

Ruud van Nistelrooy Also Discussed

Man United have also discussed a potential move for former striker and interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy as another option alongside Solskjaer and Carrick.

According to GIVEMESPORT sources, the Dutch tactician, who remains unemployed after leaving Leicester in June, is firmly among the list of names United are considering at present.
