Roy Keane has revealed that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe would be his top choice to replace Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.
The Red Devils sacked Amorim on Monday after he criticised the club’s hierarchy in an explosive outburst following United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds last weekend.
Darren Fletcher, who took charge for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Burnley, is temporarily acting as caretaker manager while Manchester United hunt for an interim head coach until the end of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Michael Carrick are among the names being considered by the Premier League giants, who sit seventh in the table following three disappointing draws on the bounce.
Asked if former team-mate Solskjaer, who enjoyed a fruitful spell as caretaker manager after Jose Mourinho‘s sacking during the 2018-19 season, would be the right choice again, Keane told Sky Sports: ‘You could throw 20 names at me and I’d still say the same thing. Whoever goes in, you wish them well.
‘Do I think it’s the right or wrong answer? I don’t know. If it’s until the end of the season, I think Ole would do alright. Do I see Ole as the manager for the next four or five seasons, getting United back competing, then probably not.’
Roy Keane has revealed Eddie Howe would be his top choice to become Man United manager
Keane said of Howe: ‘I love his calmness, I think sometimes Man United need a bit of that’
Pressed by Sky Sports presenter David Jones for the manager he would appoint, Keane replied after a brief moment of contemplation: ‘I’d go Eddie Howe. I like him. I like what he’s done, his management. He’s managed a lot of games, when his teams are at it, they play good football.
‘I know he’s not for everyone, he’ll have his critics but I like what he’s done at Newcastle and Bournemouth, he’s managed 700 to 800 games, he’s still a young man. I love his calmness, I think sometimes Man United need a bit of that.
‘We’ve seen the previous manager going in – I like people with emotion, obviously I’m quite an emotional person – but I think his calmness, what he’s done at Newcastle, Champions League a couple of times, winning the (League) Cup. I’d be happy to see him go in there.’
Howe’s Newcastle leapfrogged Manchester United into fifth place on Thursday with a sensational 4-3 victory over Leeds, which came courtesy of a last-gasp strike from Harvey Barnes 12 minutes into stoppage time.
During his five years at St James’ Park, Howe has helped establish Newcastle as a top four contender every season, twice qualifying the Magpies for the Champions League.
Howe wrote his name into the Newcastle history books in 2025 when he steered the club to their first domestic trophy in 70 years, winning the League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the final.
