Exactly who would come in for the Dutchman isn’t known yet, but one potential option didn’t use Hugo Ekitike very well in the past.
Will Luis Enrique become the next Liverpool manager
When Liverpool were in the midst of a run of nine defeats in 12 late in 2025, it was said that the Reds want Luis Enrique to replace Slot in the long-term.
The 55-year-old is, of course, still honing his craft with PSG, who are dominating in France and Europe under his guidance.
However, it has emerged this week, via Marca, that Enrique doesn’t want to sign a new deal in Paris and would like to seek a new challenge come the summer.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool will firm up their interest in the coach, but if he did move to Anfield, Ekitike may not be too pleased.
Hugo Ekitike was unhappy under Luis Enrique
The Frenchman has scored 11 since securing a move to Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt this past summer.
Prior to a prolific spell in Germany that led to his recent move, Ekitike worked under Enrique at PSG.
The 23-year-old made just one appearance during the Spaniard’s first season in the dugout and spoke about his displeasure at how his time in Ligue 1 ended.
Ekitike commented on his PSG stint in an interview in March 2025, saying: “I will never say that I did everything well. I could have done better, that’s the truth, but no one helped me to do better.
“No one gave me confidence. Even during training, even through discussions. No one ever really took the time to talk with me to be able to help me.”
A lot has changed since then, of course, and Ekitike has become one of the most prolific number nines in the Premier League.
But the prospect of having to work under a manager who never picked you may not fill the Liverpool ace with joy.
