Newcastle United’s dramatic 4-3 win over Leeds United on Wednesday evening would have put a smile on Kevin Keegan’s face.

That was the verdict of former Magpies goalkeeper Shay Given, who feels Newcastle delivering a win and a performance like that on the night it was announced Keegan is undergoing treatment for stomach cancer, made it ‘even more special’.

Keegan twice galvanised Newcastle United, once as a player in the eighties and even more famously as a manager in the nineties as he took United from Division One to the brink of the Premier League title.

His ‘Entertainers’ team captured the hearts of the nation for their exciting brand of football and on a night where Newcastle came from behind three times to win a seven goal thriller with the latest winning goal in Premier League history, it felt like the most fitting tribute to a genuine club legend.

And Given, who played under Keegan during his second spell as Newcastle manager, shared those sentiments while working as a pundit on the game.

“Oh my goodness,” Given told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“You just love football sometimes, don’t you? Sometimes you hate it and sometimes you love it and I am feeling good at the minute. When you score a goal like that and the place is absolutely rocking.

“And on a night as well where I’d just like to mention the news that broke about Kevin Keegan, one of the brilliant, best managers Newcastle have ever had, the Entertainers, and to win a game like that, 4-3, on the evening that’s been announced just makes it even more special for these fans.

“They were singing his name and I am sure Kevin wherever he is tonight in hospital would have been watching that and it at least has given him some sort of smile on his face.

“We are all thinking about him and we wish him well.”
