Newcastle United fans woke up this morning still trying to compute what they watched in Wednesday night’s dramatic 4-3 win over Leeds United.
Eddie Howe’s side came from behind three times before Harvey Barnes fired home the latest winning goal in Premier League history as his 102nd minute strike sealed a vital three points for Newcastle.
Brenden Aaronson fired Leeds into a first half lead after Malick Thiaw’s unfortunate slip but Barnes quickly had Newcastle back on level terms with a close range finish after a clever Nick Woltemade lay-off.
But Leeds were back in front at half-time after Thiaw’s handball allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score his ninth goal of the season from the penalty spot.
Newcastle were level again after Joelinton brilliantly headed Bruno Guimaraes’ exquisite outside of the right foot cross past Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri and into the far corner.
But Leeds again took the lead as Aaronson fired home his second goal of the evening and the 16th placed side looked certain to leave Tyneside with three points.
That was until Aaronson turned from hero to villain as he handled Lewis Hall’s cross in the 89th minute and Guimaraes dispatched the penalty kick to level proceedings with his eighth goal of the season.
And then Barnes sparked dramatic scenes inside St James’ Park as he smashed home the winning goal in the 12th minute of stoppage time to raise the roof off the stadium.
And club legend Alan Shearer summed up the thoughts of every Newcastle fan as he took to social media to share his excited reaction at full-time
“Wowwwwwww!!!!!!” Shearer posted on X. “What a bonkers game of football. Harveyyyyyyyy.”
It was Newcastle’s third successive Premier League win and they have now moved up to sixth in the table, just two points off the top four.
The Magpies will turn their attention towards the cups over the next week as they take on Bournemouth in the FA Cup third round on Saturday before Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City.
They return to Premier League action next Sunday when they take on rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
