8 in total. That puts him above Sels with 7 and Johnstone and Petrović with 6

It’s almost as if when your manager openly says “I don’t give a shit about defending low xG long shots” players take low xG longshots under literally no pressure and as they are professional they bend it in.
OPdoesnotrespond on
I mean Vic’s not covering himself in glory, but Frank’s idea of defending isn’t covering shooters outside the box.
snortingajax on
Do they keep stats for how many times a keeper yells at outfield players after a goal?
DrunkenKoalas on
Same thing happened with lloris under conte and mourinho
One thing tho, if our opponents can shoot from outside the box, why the fuck do we dilly-dally the ball around their box just to give it away????
No-Mind-6493 on
Every shot from outside the box scares me man that Morgan Rogers one comes to mind, awful positioning
DetectiveCostaue on
The worst thing is, the goalkeeper situation is like our 3rd most important area of the pitch that needs addressing. He isn’t helping especially since we can’t score much so every goal matters more, but man is he the least of our problems.

Words can’t describe the way my heart sank when I saw Semenyo lining up a shot

I mean.
Is there any other manager in the Premier League who specifically tells his players to stand off and not close down players taking shots from outside the box because he wants them shooting?
Like, i get Vicario hasn’t been great but he has faced so many shots outside the box that get an age to take a shot with.
AlternativeBet1209 on
Arsenal got Raya who’s proved to be the best in the league this season.
We got Vic who has been decent but we need to face up to the fact that no real competition has led to a serious dip in form. We should be looking elsewhere for a replacement.
browniespurs on
Vic is by no means a world class keeper, but he’s not our biggest problem. This is something he’s clearly bad at, so why does Frank sets the team up such that Vic keeps having to deal with something he struggles with instead of just having someone close down the player taking the shot.

Low xG shots guys…

IIRC Raya also conceded most long shots when he was at brentford

Why would anyone shoot from outside the box?
Those goals don’t count. Do they?
Tushroom on
It’s really hard to argue that he isn’t shit when he’s conceding goals that he has full sight of the entire way from distance. There aren’t any insane physics going on with these shots to throw him off. They’re easily read. If we get a fee for him I’ll be surprised because he can’t do a keeper’s number one job. Bring back Vorm or Gazzaniga.

Frank’s tactics might be shit but Romero, Porro and Vicario have been very poor this year. Romero gives the ball away in crucial areas and has been rash. Porro’s man always seems to be unmarked at the back post. Vicario has had some absolute mares with his hands and his feet.
With all our injuries, we need players to step up. Some of our most important players have been horrible this year. I know everyone is piling on Frank but nothing will change unless players like Romero, Porro and Vicario get sold or play better.
Hopeful-Ear-3494 on
Definitely his kryptonite, but also not shutting down long shots is the kryptonite for the team. Even just getting in the player’s face as they are winding up would be nice. Might put them off at the very least.

Luckily low-xG goals don’t count according to Thomas Frank
Suitable-Fun-1087 on
A big part of this is our low defensive line with little pressure on the ball, combined with an inability to keep possession.
In other words, this is a direct impact of how Frank sets us up
Odd-Ice-5609 on
Honestly I know Vicario is frustrating but it’s not all on him. few of these long range goals were caused by lack of pressing by the defense. Defenders just let the opponent get a shot off with no pressure at times
user12833 on
Frank said not taking risks is a risk. I guess we just weren’t aware that the risk he wants to take is a soft press for anyone just outside the box.
Conman2205 on
Bigger issue is his complete inability to kick the ball surrendering possession immediately.
The goals from outside the box come from failing to close attackers down more than Vicario. Semenyo, Rogers, Buendia, Sangare, Vitinha, there is more.
Just failing at the basics of defending, it’s so easy to not concede belters from outside the box if you simply make it hard for the player to shoot rather than giving them 10 yards of space.
ASD_213 on
I’m still Frank in, but it’s quite obvious we have a huge weakness applying pressure on the ball around our box and I suspect it’s down to coaching. Two of the goal conceded today were a direct result of that. Vicario is beginning to turn into a weak link but I don’t think long shots are a particular weakness of his.

Can any stat people find out if we’ve scored a goal from outside the box this season
BathroomHopeful241 on
Why are players so comfortable banging shit in from far away? Shouldn’t there be a midfielder or a couple world class center backs there to prevent that sort of thing? I don’t think it’s up to vicario keep teams scoreless on his own. Games are not played on charts.

Hard not to feel like Vicario is a casualty of Frank’s tactics on this particular metric.

Think i might be coming to the conclusion that he’s just fundamentally not a great keeper. He’s had numerous dodgy spells throughout his career here, some great reaction saves here and there but he let’s in screamers regularly, his distribution is rancid, and he has a penchant for the not occasional enough howler.
That said, i could probably go through most of the players and find reasons why they aren’t good enough tonight.

I feel for him so much. Just two seasons ago he was in the conversation for the best keeper in the league 🙁

Where are the Vic defenders now? Got downvoted I to oblivion earlier this year suggesting he wasn’t up to par.
He has some amazing shot stopping games, but I would take post peak Lloris over him.

I’d put that more on the defenders than Vic. You have to step out to prevent those shots. I wonder what the stats look like on shots conceded from outside the box compared to other sides.
Global-Fun2774 on
Vic is a great shot stopper, but he has poor decision making, piss poor distribution and can be rattled by opponents crowding around him.
I love his personality, but we need someone who can take the pressure better, and someone who can find our forward players with a pass when the defence is under pressure.

Man we should have bought Kelleher when we had the chance. Not all these are Vicarios fault, tactics a huge factor but he literally can’t play ball to feet. So nervy when it comes to him and positioning really suss for many of these goals.
