Ipswich’s tally of 42 goals is second only to leaders Coventry City, but midfielders Jaden Philogene (nine) and Jack Clarke (eight) are the main contributors.
First-choice striker George Hirst has six in the league but is currently injured, while Ivan Azon and Chuba Akpom have only scored twice each.
The Tractor Boys brought in 11 players last summer following relegation from the top flight and boss Kieran McKenna insisted in the first part of the campaign, when they won only three of their first 10 games, that it would take time for them to gel.
“All the talk about settling players in – there were a number of excuses coming out from the club – that was a bit overplayed,” said Mills.
“There is no reason now to talk about anything negative, it’s got to be all positive from this moment onwards.”
Mills thinks some of the other teams below Ipswich may already have peaked and the opportunity is there for McKenna’s men to press on with confidence.
“From this moment onwards, games just disappear so quickly. You’re past halfway and you can almost start a bit of a countdown.
“It’s so important (in) the months of January to February to get yourselves a position and then you’re not far off from seeing the finish line and you know exactly what you’ve got to do and what you haven’t got to do,” continued Mills.
“The players have settled, they’re playing for Ipswich Town Football Club and they are trying to get promotion to the Premiership. It’s all there for them to see and understand and we’re up and running.”
The postponement of Sunday’s game at Portsmouth means Ipswich do not have another Championship fixture until they face Blackburn Rovers in a lunchtime kick-off at Portman Road on 17 January.
This Saturday, Town play League One side Blackpool in the FA Cup and McKenna faces a dilemma over how many changes to make.
Mills added: “You could look at it and think ‘yes, the players need a rest’ and this is a good opportunity or you could say that’s a good fixture for them just to keep the ball rolling, to keep their momentum going.”
