The high xG in the last two games is because they were against teams that didn't play a low block. The xG overperformance is not a bug its a feature, hence why they have one of the least amount of short range shots in the league and the second highest number of both shots and long range shots. They've found a type of low xG oppurtunity that is rarely well defended against in a low block and have optimised it.
If teams press the outside of the box to close them down, they will free up space in the box. So its sustainable if teams don't press them (especially given Villa have conceded one of the least in the league), if teams do press them then Villa can get in behind/in the box.

Villa have had a similar amount of injuries. They’re hamstrung by FFP /PSR/SCR or whatever it’s called. The game is dictated by revenue and that will always be a handicap to a club like Villa. Even Newcastle can’t spend.

I have a feeling an element of Arsenal’s great defensive numbers are down to how opponents play against them, concentrating on stopping them rather than attacking them.
But Villa just showed it’s worth going at them, and it will be interesting if more teams now stop treating them as unbeatable.
