Aston Villa were always going to struggle in our first game post Arsenal, of that I was sure. We did… BUT, thanks to the brilliance of Youri Tielemans we managed to get over the line and add another 3 points to the tally in the Europa League thanks to a 2-1 away victory over Basel!

Yes we played ugly and won but what was disturbing was the fact that bizot was incapable of punching or catching the ball when it was in the air and the fact that a lot of passes went way wood throughout the game. I just cannot see what Sancho offers us.

Methinks you are too kind, amigo. I feel like I watched a different game. We played mediocrely at best and abysmally at worst, sluggish and careless, giving the ball away repeatedly. We were VERY lucky to come away with a win. Buendia had a stinker, Bizot should have risked life & limb to punch away the ball that ended in his net for the Basel goal and there was simply no attack from what felt like a B-team. I don't see how Malen could be given a rating at all, seeing as he had zero service and touched the ball maybe twice, and I felt the same about Bogard: that he looked, as you say, out of his depth.
Villa badly need wingers! Guessand is incapable of running at defenders and, quite honestly, just isn't good enough for this team and level. As for Jadon Sancho: you award him a 6?????? He was dreadful. He probably shouldn't wear a Villa shirt again. He gave away the ball four times in a row, following which he simply passed the ball out of play. He wasn't the only one to gift a throw-in to Basel. A curse seemed to be on the entire of Villa's left. Digne was a 4 or a 5. He can defend but he doesn't have the wherewithal of Maatsen going forward.
Yes, it was Tielemanns, again, who demonstrated the quality of football that Villa need if we are going to make the grade. Apart from him, I had my head in my hands at the team performance.
