Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rolled back the years as the veteran Marseille forward scored a quickfire double to stun Newcastle United in the Champions League.

The English side’s struggles away from home continued as their hosts came from behind thanks to two goals from the 36-year-old former Arsenal and Chelsea frontman at a febrile Stade Velodrome. The in-form Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the dream start after opening the scoring with a clinical sixth-minute finish from inside the box. That followed a brilliant headed clearance off the line from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to deny Magpies defender Malick Thiaw. But the visitors – who have won just once on their travels this season – dropped off and allowed Marseille to dominate possession and create a number of opportunities for Aubameyang.

Although he spurned a series of openings in the first half, the Gabon international looked more like his old self after the break. The second half had only just got under way when 17-year-old Darryl Bakola played a through-ball into the right-hand channel behind Newcastle’s defence. Nick Pope, sensing Aubameyang was racing on to it, rushed off his line in an attempt to get there first, but the Newcastle goalkeeper was caught in no man’s land as the forward finished superbly from a tight angle out on the right-hand side. Marseille made it two goals in four minutes when Timothy Weah darted past Tino Livramento down the right and picked out Aubameyang, who got ahead of Fabian Schar to hook the ball home at the near post. The goal sent the French side’s manager Roberto de Zerbi dancing down the touchline in delight.

And the former Brighton boss was punching the air at full-time as Marseille claimed their second Champions League win of the season to move up to 19th place in the standings, while Newcastle are eighth.

  1. Making the most of the trips again result aside. The Atmosphere looked mental.

I don't think that defeat happens without Nick Popes error. So early in the second half the crowd didn't need an invitation to impact their players and Marseille rode that wave.

Granted we were not spectacular but the way the game played out in the 1st half I felt we had enough of secure at least a draw

This could be a very unforgiving month need any kind of win on Saturday and win against spurs after to go with it.

  2. Excellent video Lee, the special Last Word format definitely worked.

But talking about things that worked, sort things out with Sam & Johnny so that the home & occasional away Last Words can return to how they'd been for the last couple of seasons. Your views will benefit from it.

  3. Im not sure why we seem to drop off when we score ,we tend to start dropping back and inviting pressure . We need to keep the pressure on, i was suprised to see livramento play 2 games on the trot especialy being as hall seemed to be the fitter, i thought we where gonna play burn . I love dan burn and his commitment but hall gives way more going forward

  4. There are so many things wrong with the side, it's hard to know where to begin.
Gordon has been terrible for a while now, maybe since that Liverpool interest. If he want to leave, let him, he isn't even half the player he was 18 months ago. As for him being a striker, I knew it wouldn't end well.
Gordon shouldn't be up front, and he needs to earn his place. Barnes is far better on the left, he has an end product too. If Gordon doesn't pull his socks up soon, I think we move him on as soon as possible.
Nick Pope needs to sit out for a little while and get his confidence back. Ramsdale is a good keeper, lets use him.
    Elanga? who?
Wasn't Ramsay a Joelinton stand in? Why isn't Eddie playing him then?
Then there is Eddie – his tactics and his in game management. Is he playing favourites? it sure looks like it.
He keeps doing the same thing, and it isn't working anymore. It's frustrating to watch, especially when the fan base is saying the same things.

Anyway, great video mate! Thanks. 🤘

  5. Eddies loyalty to Pope and Gordan is poison in the well. No signs that Gordan is going to find form anytime soon. Keepers get one big fuck up per season, he’s had several already. Rather just put Joe up front just to have someone with strength hold up the ball. I’m worried we won’t be winning any of the last 3 CL games. Bayern and PSV looked good. Eddie won’t change anything major though.

  6. Glad some of you got an overall good experience in Marseille..

as a Marseille fan, I have been to many away games and we get the same treatment as away fans coming here ( fan zone / early departure to stadium/ late exit from stadium) .

True that Police could be a bit more friendly and not hit you for rising a finger but for sure you would have had trouble in Marseille if you guys were hanging in the cty in small groups..

to end .. big respect to Newcastle, their fans.. you are exactly what we expect of and English club.. I'm not a fan, but I remenber watching my first ever football as a kid in 1978 ( Bastia /newcastle ) and ever since them have been keeping an eye on your club 's result's .. St james park is special is on my bucket list.. Safe trip home Geordies

  7. Thanks for your nice words about our supporters fans.!! Respect for English fans and all the best for your team!! Your are always welcome in Marseille!!

  8. That interview with eddie makes me so mad. What game was he watching? We were shite for most of the first half and all over the place in the second. Life of a goalkeeper he says, i back him he says. He's cost us multiple times. How many points does pope get to cost us.

  9. Howe has to bite the bullet and stop being so loyal to Pope, put the team first and start Ramsdale. He won't though, I'd put my mortgage on Pope starting on Saturday. I'll probably get hammered for this – but I'd drop Tonali. He looks knackered playing 90 mins every game, he never gets rested. Hopefully with a better team playing against Everton we do better but if we lose again, the pressure is on Howe.
