From Ben Brereton’s fabulous recent transformation from an England youth team international to a senior Chile international, to Premier League full-back Matty Cash recently declaring for Poland, HITC Sevens takes a look at some of football’s more unusual nationality switches.

  1. One of the stupidest rules ever. How you have a connection if you're grandparents came from there and you never been there. Most of those players wouldn't have made the national team from the country they are originally from. It sounds like a chance for a small fish to be a big fish in a smaller pond.

  2. I don't understand the perplexity over Cash and Brereton. They have a parent from that country, making them half English, half Polish/Chilean. Surely that is understandable? Certainly better than the others on the list!
Good luck to them both, hope they do well

  3. So how about making a video for footballers who played for your England with little connection, there is Sterling, Barns, and zaha to get you started.

  4. Brazilians. It’s incredible. I used to live in Shanghai and you would see Brazilian football superstars everywhere. They are nationalised and start to play for china’s national team.

Even crazier it’s that china has a one nationality policy so they have to resign from being a Brazilian citizen. They get paid stupid money tho, people claim they get paid around 100M just as a bonus for discussing the deal.

  5. A story (though I wouldn’t really say story) I find a little funny is Rogelio Funes Mori. Argentina born, has a twin brother who also plays professionally named Ramiro, started in FC Dallas youth academy here in North America, then went to River Plate, then moved to CF Monterrey in Mexico, played there for 5 years and is now representing Mexico while his twin still represents Argentina, all while he has no link to Mexico. Rogelio also says it’s like a dream come true for him, I don’t know though. I really hope to see both Funes Mori brothers on the same pitch in the World Cup this year though, even if their family would have split jerseys supporting both of them

  6. Never heard of the story of Van den Hauwe before but it's pretty much the exact same as Maik Taylor. 88 caps for Northern Ireland with absolute zero connection to the country at all.

  7. I remember there were calls for Kevin Nolan to get a Netherlands call up, as much as I loved the guy; that was never going to happen

  8. Matty Cash’s mother wasn’t born in Poland. She was born in England. His grandparents where born in Poland, but even they lived in Poland only until 7/8 years old.

  9. AH YESS.. South Africa has an unfortunate history with foreign born players.. this one France Born defender repped SAFA during the world cup and bagged two own goals.. against..France
